The 58th Eurovision Song Contest took place from May 14th to 18th, 2013 in the Malmö Arena . The host was Sveriges Television ( SVT ) after the singer Loreen , who appeared for Sweden , won the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku with her contribution Euphoria .
The final was seen by over 170 million viewers. The winner was the song Only Teardrops , performed by the Danish singer Emmelie de Forest .
venue
The application deadline for the event expired on June 21, 2012. The event hall must be available for six weeks before May 20, 2013.
Have applied Stockholm (incl. Solna ) and Malmo . Gothenburg had initially expressed interest, but the Scandinavium event hall there , in which the Eurovision Song Contest took place in 1985 , was not available in April because of the show jumping World Cup .
Stockholm was considered a favorite, but at the same time, the 2013 men's ice hockey world championship was already hosting an elaborate major event that will also use the city's largest event hall, the Ericsson Globe . Instead, the new Friends Arena in Solna entered the race, which has now also hosted the final of the 2013 national preliminary round.
Malmö ultimately won the bid. Those in charge praised the well-crafted proposals from the two candidates. The decisive factor in favor of the Malmö Arena event hall, which can hold up to 15,500 spectators, was ultimately the infrastructure there and the fact that the Friends Arena, which could have seated up to 35,000 spectators, was viewed as large and expensive. The development of the past few years with ever larger arenas and out of control costs is not sustainable for the ESC and has not brought any improvement in the result.

format
Moderation
On January 28, 2013, the Swedish comedian Petra Mede was presented as the presenter of the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö. It had been known for a long time that there would be only one moderator in 2013 instead of three, as three moderators were considered more expensive and more rehearsal. The last time the ESC was moderated in 1995 by the Irish presenter Mary Kennedy alone.
motto
The official motto of the event was We Are One ("We are one"). It should highlight the equality and solidarity of all participating countries. Furthermore, the culture and value of each country should be addressed in the network of all countries. The ESC anthem We Write the Story was written by former ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and produced together with DJ Avicii .
National juries
The national juries decide 50% of the final result at the Eurovision Song Contest. For this, the members of a country will meet and watch the dress rehearsal of the shows together. Each member then creates a ranking of all the evening's contributions based on the song's voice, composition and originality. Everyone should do this independently of the others. As soon as all lists have been completed, they will be checked by the EBU and converted into points. The following people sat on the German jury:
Germany
country | Members | Known as |
---|---|---|
Germany | Lena | Singer, winner 2010 , participant 2011 |
Tim bendzko | Singer | |
Alina Süggeler | singer | |
Carolin Niemczyk | singer | |
Florian Silbereisen | Singer |
New voting rule
After the re-introduction of the jury rating at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow, the basis for awarding points was changed in 2013. In the past four years, not all titles were taken into account in the 50/50 weighting of the televoting and the jury evaluation, only the respective best ten.
In the participating countries, the results of the televoting and the jury evaluation will be used to rank all titles participating in the show. As before, the title of “own” country is ignored in the ranking. Then the numbers of the individual songs from the televoting and the jury evaluation are added up. The sum of the place numbers results in a combined sequence of televoting and jury evaluation. The first ten titles from this combined order receive the "usual" 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 points from the respective country.
On May 28, 2013, the EBU published the rankings of the participants averaged over all voting countries separately after jury evaluation and televoting.
Attendees
countries
On December 21st, 2012 it was announced that 39 countries will start in Malmö. Of the participating countries, Sweden qualified as the host country and the "Big Five" (Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) qualified directly for the final on May 18, 2013. Armenia is taking part again after a one-year break. Bosnia-Herzegovina , Portugal and Slovakia canceled this year's participation due to financial difficulties. In addition, Turkey did not take part, as the country no longer agreed with the status of the “Big Five” and the equal weighting of the jury and televoting in the points assessment.
The ESC Reference Group announced on November 7th, 2012 that the starting order of both the semi-finals and the final will not be drawn as in previous years, but will be determined by the host broadcaster. The start order must then be confirmed by the ESC Reference Group . This innovation was accepted by the TV committee of the European Broadcasting Union .
Recurring performers
Bledar Sejko took part in the Song Contest for the second time in 2013. He previously represented Albania in 2011 when he played the backing vocals for Aurela Gaçe , but was eliminated in the semifinals. National preliminary decisions
Belgium
On December 16, 2012, a preliminary decision took place on Radio Vivacité in which Roberto Bellarosa presented three songs after he had been selected internally by RTBF . 50% of the winning title was determined by televoting and 50% by an expert jury. So in the end the title won Love Kills .
Germany
On February 14, 2013 in Hanover at the show Unser Song für Malmö the German entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 was selected. Cascada received a total of 30 points and won with the title Glorious , followed by LaBrassBanda with 23 and Söhne Mannheims with 17 points. Cascada was ranked first by viewers during the televoting, second by radio listeners and third by the jury.
The German preliminary decision was moderated by Anke Engelke .
Austria
The Austrian contribution was determined in the show Austria rocks the song contest on February 15, 2013. For the preliminary decision, five young talents were selected by ORF , who were asked to produce a song for the Eurovision Song Contest by January 2013. 18-year-old Natália Kelly was able to prevail with her song Shine . She received 70 of a total of 200 possible points, 50 percent of which were awarded by an international jury and calls from the audience. If Kelly was only in second place with two points behind her competitor Yela according to the jury votes , she was able to convince most of the viewers and in the end had a lead of 20 points.
The Austrian preliminary decision was moderated by Mirjam Weichselbraun and Andi Knoll .
Switzerland
On December 15, 2012, the Swiss preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 took place in Kreuzlingen . The band Salvation Army won the televoting with the song You And Me with 37.54% of the votes. The Carrousel (J'avais rendez-vous) group received 17.26 percent of the vote, finishing in second place. With 11.75 percent, Jesse Ritch (Forever & A Day) came third in the televoting. The big decision show was moderated by Sven Epiney .

Semifinals
draw
On January 17, 2013, the two semi-finals were drawn in a ceremony in Malmö City Hall. The countries that do not automatically qualify for the final have been allocated to one of five pots for the draw based on their voting behavior over the past nine years. The allocation was made by the company that oversees the televoting for the EBU .
Exceptions to this were Israel, Denmark and Norway. Because of the celebrations for the Jewish holiday Shavuot on the day of the first semi-final, Israel was assigned to the second semi-final. The two neighboring countries of Sweden should not start in the same semifinals to avoid that the expected high ticket demand from these two countries is concentrated in one semifinals. Therefore, in a special draw in November 2012, Denmark was drawn to the first and Norway to the second semifinals (see Pot 0).
In addition, it was also determined in which semifinals the Big Five ( Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, as well as the host Sweden) will be entitled to vote.
A new system was used this year to determine the starting order of the participants. In advance it was determined in which semifinals the participating countries would compete. After that, it was not determined by lot, as in previous years, at which starting place the participants would be, but according to dramaturgical aspects. The starting positions were determined by Executive Supervisor Jon Ola Sand in coordination with the EBU Reference Group.

final
The final took place on May 18, 2013 at 9:00 p.m. ( CEST ). The Big Five countries (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom) and the host country Sweden qualified directly for the final. There were also ten countries each from the two semi-finals, so that 26 countries competed in the final. All participating countries were entitled to vote.
Finland and Georgia took part in the finals again after two years, Belarus , Belgium and Armenia after three years and the Netherlands after nine years. With the exception of Armenia, all of the countries mentioned were eliminated in the semifinals during the period mentioned. Armenia only dropped out in 2011, they did not participate in 2012.
The finale was opened with the song We Write the Story , composed especially for the Eurovision Song Contest and produced by former ABBA members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus in collaboration with Swedish DJ Avicii . As an interval act, the presenter Petra Mede performed with Swedish Smörgåsbord , a stage show in which Swedish culture is ironically portrayed. The Swedish singer and winner of the ESC 1991 , Carola Häggkvist , also briefly performed there . Last year's winner Loreen also performed a medley of the titles My Heart Is Refusing Me , We Got The Power and her winning title Euphoria , as well as Sarah Dawn Finer with the ABBA song The Winner Takes It All . The host Sweden's starting number 16 was determined in advance at a press conference. The start numbers of the Big Five and all other countries qualified for the final were determined on May 17, 2013. Each of the 39 participating countries was entitled to vote. The following participants (hosts, "Big Five" and the winners of the semi-finals) contested the final on May 18, 2013:

Eurovision preview parties
Every year before the actual ESC there are still a few promotional events where the participants present themselves to the press and fans abroad. The preview parties are used for this purpose , although they are not a mandatory event for participants in the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2013 there were two events of this kind.
Eurovision in Concert
The fifth edition of Eurovision in Concert took place on April 13, 2013 in Melkweg in Amsterdam . The two former Eurovision participants Marlayne Sahupala ( 1999 ) and Linda Wagenmakers ( 2000 ) moderated the event. The three-time Swedish Eurovision participant Carola Häggkvist ( 1982 , 1991 and 2006 ) was invited as a special guest . The following 26 countries took part:
London Eurovision Party 2013
The London Eurovision Party 2013 took place on April 21, 2013 in the Shadow Lounge in London . The event was moderated by Nicki French and Paddy O'Connell. British actor and singer John Alford was invited as a special guest. The following seven countries took part in the event:
Problems in advance
Azerbaijan
According to the Lithuanian news portal 15min.lt , which is part of the Norwegian media group Schibsted , Azerbaijan has bought votes in 15 countries, including Estonia, Latvia, Switzerland, Ukraine and Croatia, with the help of an Azerbaijani "support team". Lithuanian journalists posed as students and filmed Azerbaijani recruiters offering them money to vote on different cell phone SIM cards for Azerbaijan.
In addition, Russia accuses Azerbaijan of “stealing votes” because the Russian contribution What If by Dina Garipova received zero points from Azerbaijan, even though the song came second in the SMS election there. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that this “unheard of event will not go without reaction”.
Switzerland
On December 17, 2012 it was announced that the band Salvation Army , which won the Swiss preliminary decision on December 15, 2012, may not start under the name "Salvation Army" or in the uniforms of the Salvation Army in Malmö, as this violates the EBU statutes would. The next day the Salvation Army announced that it was looking for an ESC-compatible solution together with Swiss radio and television , although the EBU decision was met with incomprehension. In particular, it is not understandable why the uniforms are not permitted, since the costume is free for all participants. After internal discussions, the band announced that they would change their name and uniform for the competition.
On March 13th, the group changed their name to Takasa and changed their clothes to white and blue.
Germany
Shortly after the preliminary decision , strong similarities were found between Cascada's contribution Glorious and last year's winning song, Euphoria . The phonetician of the University of Kiel, Tina John, said: “At the beginning the singing is absolutely identical, the refrain uses the same accentuation, the end culminates in an identical combination. The singers even use the same breathing style. "
The plagiarism allegation was invalidated on February 18, 2013 by an expert opinion commissioned by the NDR. The songs are "only stylistically similar, but no significant copyright matches can be proven."
Macedonia
The Macedonian broadcaster MKRTV exchanged the originally selected song Imperija after protests from Greece and their own country.
The Greek media criticized the title Imperija wake associations with the ancient Macedonia , in particular, as in the accompanying video clip one in Skopje located Alexander statue is shown. In Macedonia, on the other hand, the audience was dissatisfied with the song. The singer Esma Redžepova has no way of showing what her voice can do. The matter made such waves that even Al Jazeera Balkans reported it. Due to the pressure, Macedonian television decided to swap the title.
Belarus
Belarus also exchanged its song at short notice. Instead of Rhythm of Love , Aljona Lanskaja Solayoh sang .
Bulgaria
After the Bulgarian National Television announced that there were copyright problems with the song Kismet , the broadcaster, with the consent of the two performers, decided to replace the song with Samo Shampioni . The two titles already shared first place in the Bulgarian preliminary decision - Kismet won the televoting and Samo Shampioni the jury rating; According to the rules of the Bulgarian preliminary decision, the song that came first in the televoting would have been sent to Malmö.
