The 20th Eurovision Song Contest took place in Stockholm on March 22, 1975 , after the ABBA group had won the year before . It was moderated by Karin Falck . The winner was the group Teach-In , which started for the Netherlands with their song Ding-a-dong .
particularities
There was a lot of excitement about the song contest in the Swedish capital Stockholm. Extensive security measures were taken as an attack by the Japanese Red Army on the Israeli delegation was feared. The German candidate Joy Fleming was also picked up from the airport by bodyguards because an alleged Jürgen-Marcus fan had made death threats against her on the phone.
In addition , an alternative music festival took place in Sweden with the Alternative Festival from March 17th to 22nd, which was organized by the alternative music scene in Sweden as a counter-movement to the commercially perceived Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm that same week. It was protested that the public broadcaster Sveriges Radio spent its music budget for the year mainly on commercial, internationally oriented pop music and that the local cultural and music scene in Sweden was insufficiently funded. The alternative festival was a great success and resulted in Sveriges Radio not sending a Swedish contribution to the song contest the following year.
There was also tension among Eurovision members. For the first time, Turkey participated in the event in 1975 . Greece therefore decided not to participate due to Turkey's debut. The Cyprus conflict was topical. In the following year, Turkey did not take part, but broadcast the event, but ignored the Greek contribution.
For Germany, Joy Fleming took part with A song can be a bridge . She landed on 17th and thus third from last place. Simone Drexel competed for Switzerland with a German-language song. She landed in 6th place with the song Mikado .
Attendees
The Turkey participated in the competition for the first time. Due to the participation of Turkey, Greece decided not to send a contribution to Stockholm. In contrast, France and Malta took part again, so that there was a new participation record with 19 countries.
Voting procedure
This year, the point system that is so typical of the Eurovision Song Contest was introduced, which existed until 2015. In each country there was an eleven-member jury, which initially determined the ten best songs internally. Then the individual juries awarded 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 points and 1 point to these ten best songs.
