The 11th Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson Européenne , the official title this year, took place in Luxembourg on March 5, 1966 , as last year's winner France Gall had competed for this country.
particularities
Although the rule had been introduced a year earlier that a song did not have to be in the national language, the old rule was reintroduced in 1966 that each country was only allowed to perform texts in its own language. This was decided because of the Swedish contribution last year when the interpreter sang exclusively in English .
The winner was Udo Jürgens with the song Merci, Chérie . After 1964 and 1965 he competed again for his home country Austria and made it onto the podium in this third attempt. With 31 points, he received almost twice as many as the second-placed Swedes.
The British representative Kenneth McKellar is so far the only interpreter who has appeared in the song competition in a kilt . Milly Scott , the representative of the Netherlands , was the first black singer in the competition.
The second-placed Sweden received a total of 16 points, 15 of them from the Scandinavian neighbors Norway and Denmark and Finland . The audience in the hall was not happy about it. Also Portugal received 5 out of 6 from neighboring Spain .
This time it was Italy and Monaco that did not receive any points.
After the poor German results in the two previous years (last two places with zero points), Hessischer Rundfunk internally selected Margot Eskens to represent Germany. A jury of 9 members selected the title for Luxembourg from the 85 submitted titles.
Attendees
As in the previous year, eighteen countries took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1966.
Voting procedure
The voting procedure introduced in 1964 applied. Each country was able to award a total of nine points, of which the first place within the jury received five points, the second three points and the third one point. If only one song was nominated, all nine points would be awarded. If there were two, the first would get six points and the second three points.
