The 65th Euro Vision Song Contest took place in the period from 18 to 22 May 2021 Rotterdam Ahoy in the Dutch city of Rotterdam place after Duncan Laurence the 2019 Euro Vision Song Contest in Israel's Tel Aviv with the song Arcade won for the Netherlands and the 2020 event in Rotterdam was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . This was the fifth time that the country hosted the Eurovision Song Contest after 1958 , 1970 , 1976 and 1980 .
On March 20, 2020, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that the ESC's reference group had decided, in accordance with the applicable rules, that the songs that were originally selected for 2020 should not be submitted again for 2021. It was left to the broadcasters of the participating countries whether the same or a different artist should be selected for the ESC 2021.
The competition was won with 524 points for Italy by the rock band Måneskin with their self-written song Zitti e buoni . It was the first Italian contribution since 1990 to win. Overall, it was the country's third win in the competition. The French Barbara Pravi took second place with Voilà . Third place went to Gjon's Tears for Switzerland with the song Tout l'univers , which scored the most jury points with 267 points.
Austria , represented by Vincent Bueno with Amen , was eliminated in the semi-finals. Germany took penultimate place with the contribution I Don't Feel Hate sung by Jendrik .
venue
Since the ESC 2020 - which should have taken place in Rotterdam - had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the EBU, as the host, was in talks with the broadcasting companies NPO , NOS and AVROTROS as well as the city of Rotterdam as to whether the 2021 edition would be held in Rotterdam can be.
On April 8, 2020 it was announced that the decision whether Rotterdam will host the event in 2021 should be made on April 23, 2020. The EBU had given the city of Rotterdam an ultimatum so that it had to decide whether it wanted to act as an organizer or whether the EBU had to look for a new organizer. The city of Rotterdam should decide in the city council on April 23, 2020 whether there should be further costs for the ESC for 2021. The city already incurred costs of 8.1 million euros for the canceled 2020 event. Of these costs incurred, around 6.7 million euros were not covered by insurance that was not taken out. 1.4 million euros, on the other hand, are already covered by insurance and could therefore be used for preparations for 2021. The city council therefore had to vote on whether or not to provide the 6.7 million euros for 2021.
On April 23, 2020, the Rotterdam City Council decided that it would provide the 6.7 million euros. However, it is still unclear whether the competition will even take place in Rotterdam and in what form it will take place. This will depend on the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic develops and whether there is already a vaccine by 2021. After all, neither the EBU nor the Dutch broadcasters officially commented on it. However, if the Song Contest takes place in Rotterdam, the city would like to distribute free tickets to city carers. Rotterdam itself hoped to find out in May 2020 whether it would take over the hosting in 2021 or not.
On May 7, 2020 it was announced that the Dutch government would no longer allow large events until there was a vaccine for COVID-19 . Therefore, NPO planned to meet with NOS, AVROTROS, the Rotterdam City Council and the EBU to discuss this regulation. A spokesman for NPO said, however, that it is too early to provide further information and that the parties concerned will not agree on this until the end of the month.
On May 16, 2020, as part of Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light Rotterdam was presented as the venue for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021.
format
Executive supervisor
In January 2020 the EBU announced that Martin Österdahl will succeed Jon Ola Sand as the new Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest after the ESC 2020 . Prior to his appointment, Österdahl was executive producer of the 2013 and 2016 editions and a member of the Eurovision Song Contest reference group between 2012 and 2018 .
Motto and logo
On September 18, 2020, the EBU announced that the motto of the canceled 2020 Open Up competition would be kept. According to Executive Producer Sietse Bakker, the design of the logo should still be revised.
On December 4, 2020, the EBU published the new logo for the 2021 competition. It is based heavily on the design of 2020, but the abstract flags of the countries are no longer sorted according to the debut year of the respective country. For 2021, the flags are arranged according to the location of the respective capitals around Rotterdam as the central venue in the middle. The design was worked out by the Clever ° Franke agency , which was also responsible for the 2020 logo design.
"Postcards"
The postcards show stylized tiny houses that can be viewed from all sides. The houses are located in 39 locations in the Netherlands and show special places in nature, city life or the architecture of the country. The respective locations are individually selected for the artists and refer to them.
In the houses, the artists are introduced using recorded images and individual furnishings. The pictures were taken in the artists' home countries. At the end of the video the actors can be seen as holograms in or on their tiny house.
Stage design
On May 15, 2020, Sietse Bakker, Executive Producer of ESC 2021, confirmed that the stage design that was planned for the 2020 edition will be used for 2021. The reason he gave was that this had already been prepared.
Moderation
On September 18, 2020, the EBU confirmed that the 2021 competition will be moderated by the quartet selected in 2020 consisting of Chantal Janzen , Jan Smit , Edsilia Rombley and Nikkie de Jager (NikkieTutorials).
Adaptation to the COVID-19 pandemic
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 took place under special conditions. In Rotterdam Ahoy, for example, only 3,500 guests were allowed per show who had to present a daily negative corona test. This corresponded to about 20 percent of the arena's capacity. The common hygiene rules also applied. With the exception of the Australian participant, whose contribution will be recorded from her home country, all of the performers are expected to perform live in Rotterdam.
Recorded backing vocals
In order to ensure that the competition would run smoothly, the EBU announced on June 18, 2020 that it would be allowed to play the accompanying song of the participating contributions from tape for the first time in 2021. This rule change is intended to reduce the costs of the participating countries, as it allows them to travel with smaller delegations, so that accompanying singers can be dispensed with. The host television company is also relieved, as this removes technical hurdles. This option is purely optional and can also be combined with live background singing. The main vocals will be sung live as before. Whether this rule change will also apply to future competitions will be discussed within the EBU after the ESC 2021.
Attendees
countries
The participating countries had until September 16, 2020 to submit the required papers to the EBU. The respective television station representing the participating country then had until October 10, 2020 to withdraw its participation without penalty.
On October 26, 2020, the EBU announced that 41 countries would again take part in 2021. It would have been the third time in a row that 41 countries would have competed. It would also have been the first time since 1990 that all countries from the previous year had participated. However, on March 5, 2021, Armenia surprisingly withdrew its participation. This means that 40 countries have taken part, the last time in 2015 . It would also have been only the second time that 40 countries had started. On March 26, 2021, however, it was announced that Belarus had been disqualified because the submitted entry did not meet the EBU regulations. As a result, 39 countries will compete, most recently so few countries took part in 2013 . In the last ten years only fewer took part in 2014 .
Recurring performers
Performers who were previously present at the Song Contest are the Moldovan singer Natalia Gordienko , who represented the country together with Arsenium in 2006 , the Austrian singer Vincent Bueno , who supported Nathan Trent in 2017 , and Senhit , who played San Marino has already represented. She will be the first junior Eurovision Song Contest winner since the Tolmacheva sisters in 2014 to take part in the competition. The Greek interpreter Stefania also took part in the JESC for the Netherlands in 2016 as part of the Kisses trio.

Belgium
According to the schedule, the Walloon broadcaster Radio-télévision belge de la Communauté française (RTBF) would be responsible for selecting the artist in 2021. Since the 2020 competition was canceled, RTBF and VRT agreed that VRT will also take part in 2021. RTBF will therefore not be responsible for participation again until 2022.
On March 20, 2020, VRT announced that Hooverphonic , which should represent Belgium in 2020, will represent the country in the 2021 Song Contest. Your song was selected internally again. The Wrong Place, composed by Alex Callier and Charlotte Foret, and the accompanying music video were released on March 4, 2021 . The band's lead singer will be Geike Arnaert , who returned to Hooverphonic in 2020 after a 12 year absence, replacing previous singer Luka Cruysberghs .
Germany
On March 18, 2020, Thomas Schreiber announced that the Norddeutsche Rundfunk (NDR) would first have to discuss with its creative team whether the German interpreter of 2020 Ben Dolic could also compete for Germany in 2021. It was also still unclear whether Germany would even participate in 2021. Before announcing that Rotterdam will host the competition in 2021 and that it will also take place, Thomas Schreiber pointed out that the NDR had not yet made a decision on 2021, as it was still unclear at the time whether the competition would take place in 2021 at all. The NDR also wanted to make whether Ben Dolic would appear again for Germany in 2021 depending on the response to his appearance in the Elbphilharmonie . However, after these actions, the NDR did not announce a decision regarding 2021.
On July 6, 2020, those responsible for ESC Thomas Schreiber, Christian Blenker and Alexandra Wolfslast announced in an interview with ESC-Kompakt that the German representative for the ESC 2021 should be elected according to the same principle as in the previous year. According to this, the interpreter and contribution are to be selected in a multi-stage process by two independent juries. Ben Dolic was therefore not automatically placed, but he and the composer Borislaw Milanow should submit a new title for the selection. In November 2020, Dolic announced that he would not be a participant in the ESC 2021.
On February 6th, 2021 it was announced that Jendrik Sigwart will compete for Germany at the ESC. The article I Don't Feel Hate , which Jendrik wrote and produced himself, was published on February 25, 2021. It contains three lines in German, making it the first German contribution since 2007 to contain German.
Austria
On March 26, 2020, the ORF announced that the Austrian singer Vincent Bueno would represent the country again. The title of the song Amen was released on February 26, 2021. The song was published on March 10, 2021 and premiered in the Ö3-Wecker. The title was written by the Swedish producer Jonas Thander, the Swiss musician Tobias Carshey and the British songwriter Ashley Hicklin. The Austrian Marvin Dietmann will be responsible for the stage appearance. He was already responsible for the stage production of Conchita Wurst in 2014 and will also be responsible for the Cypriot, Spanish, Czech and Bulgarian stage performances in 2021.
Switzerland
On March 20, 2020, Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) announced that the singer Gjon's Tears , who was supposed to represent Switzerland in 2020, will now represent the country in 2021. This leaves Switzerland with an internal selection. SRG SSR announced on May 11, 2020 that the song with which Gjon's Tears will compete in 2021 will be selected according to the same principle as in 2019 and 2020. Composers and producers had the opportunity to submit a contribution until September 20, 2020. At the same time, Gjon's Tears had written and produced songs himself, so that in the end a song tailored to him is selected.
In December 2020, SRF announced that the song had been selected. The song was released on March 10, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. ( CET ). The song Tout l ' univers , sung entirely in French, was written by Gjon's Tears, Wouter Hardy, Nina Sampermans and Xavier Michel in a songwriting camp.

Semifinals
draw
On November 17, 2020, the EBU announced that the ESC's reference group had decided that the 2020 draw would remain in effect for 2021. This was justified by the fact that all countries that would have participated in 2020 will also participate in 2021. People who have already purchased tickets for a program should also be taken into account. Martin Österdahl, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest, said: “Under normal circumstances, we would look forward to the semi-final draw and host broadcast ceremony as an important milestone with a view to Rotterdam 2021. With the same participating countries as last year, the reference group decided that it makes sense to keep the 2020 draw for tickets already purchased and for the participating TV channels. Despite the canceled traditional ceremony in January, we have many plans to build tension around the return of the Eurovision Song Contest. "
The exact starting order of the respective semi-finals was announced via 2 YouTube videos on March 30, 2021. The producers of the ESC 2021 had determined the order.
First semifinals
The first semi-final took place on May 18, 2021 at 9:00 p.m. ( CEST ). Ten countries qualified for the final.
Germany , Italy and the Netherlands as well as the 16 participating countries were entitled to vote in this semi-final.

Cancellation and therefore no return to the ESC
country | Reason and remark | last participation |

Andorra | In November 2019, the ruling Andorra party, Demòcrates per Andorra, announced that Ràdio i Televisió d'Andorra (RTVA) would return to the competition if financial support was given. On May 17, 2020, RTVA announced that Andorra would not return to the ESC in 2021 either. The reason for this is that the broadcaster RTVA decided years ago against a return, which is made on the basis of parliament. On May 20, 2020, the singer Susanne Georgi , who last represented the country in 2009 , announced that she had found a sponsor who would cover the participation costs. In October 2019, Georgi presented her plans to the Prime Minister of Andorra Xavier Espot Zamora and the RTVA General Director Xavier Mujal. The band Anonymous , who represented Andorra at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007, also supported their plans . On August 1, 2020, Georgi announced to the Eurovision fan site Wiwibloggs that the country would not return in 2021. However, the singer had conversations with those in charge of the RTVA broadcaster and they went well. According to Georgi, RTVA is planning to return to the competition in 2022, as the broadcaster does not want to participate until the COVID-19 pandemic is completely over. Otherwise, the risk of cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic is too high for them. Georgi is also working on signing a contract stating that Andorra will be a permanent participant for at least three years with the help of the sponsor. However, Georgi also pointed out that there is still nothing official about a return, but she has received oral confirmation of a return in 2022. | 2009 |
Armenia | Although originally listed, the Armenian broadcaster AMPTV withdrew its participation on March 5, 2021. This was justified with the ongoing political crisis as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh War , the short production time and other objective reasons that make it impossible for Armenia to participate in the ESC 2021. | 2019 |
Bosnia and Herzegovina | On October 6, 2020, the Bosnian broadcaster Bosanskohercegovačka radiotelevizija (BHRT) announced that the country would not return to the competition in 2021 either. Furthermore, the broadcaster is subject to EBU sanctions for accumulated debts, which means that the EBU BHRT denies all participation in Eurovision events. BHRT is only given the right to start again when the debts have been paid. However, BHRT also said that the station is currently very financially unstable and unpredictable. Accordingly, participation is currently not possible. | 2016 |
Luxembourg | On July 30, 2020, the Luxembourg broadcaster RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg announced that the country would also stay away from the competition in 2021. The reason given was that the broadcaster is currently concentrating on news and thus an entertainment program does not fit into the broadcaster's concept. | 1993 |
Morocco | In February 2020, Karim Sbai, communications director of the Société Nationale de Radiodiffusion et de Télévision (SNRT) stated that despite media reports about talks between the station and the EBU, no decision has yet been made on Morocco's return to the competition. In the end, Morocco was not on the list of participants for 2021, so the country will not return to the competition. | 1980 |
Monaco | On September 8, 2020, the Monegasque broadcaster TMC confirmed that Monaco will also stay away from the competition in 2021. However, TMC did not give precise reasons for the absence. | 2006 |
Montenegro | On October 5, 2020, the Montenegrin Association of Pop Musicians and Performers called on the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio Televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) to return the country to the ESC in 2021. After all, the country had already withdrawn from the canceled 2020 competition in advance. The association issued a statement on this, which was published because of the comments made by RTCG council member Bojana Jokić. Jokic said in early October Let me make you happy before the media, we will not be embarrassed at Euro Vision 2021 Either (dt .: Let me do you happy before the media do, we will not embarrass even the Euro Vision 2021) . This implied that the country will forego participation in 2021. The Association of Musicians responded in a statement that states that the country has many proud musicians and performers who have already won many prizes at festivals and galas at home and abroad. The association said that Montenegro, as a small country, has already reached the finals at the ESC twice and never finished last. In addition, reference was made to the successes of Montenegro in the competition as part of the confederation of Serbia and Montenegro and as part of Yugoslavia . On October 12, 2020, RTCG announced that the country would not participate in 2021 either. However, the broadcaster did not provide a reason for not staying. | 2019 |
Slovakia | On July 11, 2020, a spokeswoman for the Slovak broadcaster RTVS announced to the Czech Eurovision fan site eurocontest.cz that it was unlikely that Slovakia would return to the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest. On August 3, 2020, RTVS announced that they would not return to the competition in 2021 either. The station cited financial restrictions and low audience ratings as reasons for staying away. However, RTVS did not completely rule out participation in the future. | 2012 |
Turkey | On May 23, 2020, the Turkish Vice Foreign Minister, Faruk Kaymakcı, announced that he hoped that Turkey would soon participate in the ESC again. He said that the Turkish broadcaster Türkiye Radyo ve Televizyon Kurumu (TRT) had problems with the EBU and that he would like both parties to enter into a dialogue with one another in order to resolve them. However, he also said that the decision to return was not in his hands and that TRT ended up being the decision maker about whether or not to participate. In the end, Turkey was not on the list of participants, so the country will not return to the competition. | 2012 |
Hungary | On October 15, 2020, the Hungarian broadcaster Duna Média published the rules for the A Dal 2021 competition . After the broadcast from 2012 to 2019 was only used to select the Hungarian contributions, the 2020 competition was held as a pure music competition independently of the ESC. The country also withdrew from the 2020 competition. Nothing about the Eurovision Song Contest can be found in the rules of A Dal 2021 either. In the end, the country was not on the list of participants for 2021. Thus, Hungary, like Montenegro, decided not to return after its last participation in 2019. A little later, the former head of the delegation Lőrinc Bubnó announced in an interview that primarily financial reasons for a Withdrawal, as participation is quite costly for the country. On the other hand, however, he also mentioned the controversial position of the state on the LGBT community at the ESC, initiated by the conservative government of Viktor Orbán . However, the head of delegation stressed that he would not take this point of view. | 2019 |
Belarus | On March 26, 2021, the EBU announced that Belarus would not take part in the 2021 Song Contest. See disqualification of Belarus . | 2019 |

Kazakhstan | On August 18, 2020, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that Kazakhstan would not be invited to the competition in 2021. The country has been taking part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest as an associated EBU member since 2018 . So Kazakhstan will not debut in 2021 either. |
Kosovo | On August 18, 2020, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that Kosovo would not be invited to the competition in 2021. So far, the country has taken part in the Eurovision Young Dancers 2011 once as a non-EBU member . This means that Kosovo will not debut in 2021 either. |
Liechtenstein | On July 30, 2020, 1 FL TV announced that Liechtenstein would not make its debut in the competition in 2021 either. The reasons for this are the participation costs, which are too high for the broadcaster, and the lack of membership in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). |
United States | In January 2020, the EBU announced that potential US participation would be discussed if the upcoming American Song Contest is a success. On August 6, it was announced that the American Song Contest would debut at the end of 2021 and that participation would not be discussed until after the issue. Several broadcasters in the US are associate members of the EBU. |

Eurovision preview parties
Every year before the actual ESC there are a few promotional events where the participants present themselves to the press and fans abroad. The preview parties are used for this purpose , but they are not compulsory events for the participants in the Eurovision Song Contest. A promotional event was planned for 2021, but this event did not take place due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Eurovision in Concert 2021
The Eurovision in Concert 2021 should have taken place on April 10, 2021 at AFAS Live , a concert hall in Amsterdam. As the 2020 event has already been canceled but tickets have already been sold, these tickets should still be valid for 2021. On February 16, 2021, the event was postponed again and will only take place again in 2022. The tickets from 2020 are still valid in 2022.
Controversy
Criticism of the Cypriot contribution
After the publication of the song El diablo , there was an uproar among Orthodox Christians in Cyprus. They felt offended by the song because it contained the devil. An online petition against the song was started, which 16,000 people signed. There the Orthodox Church of Cyprus asked the government to cancel the song as a Cypriot contribution. In it she demands that the song should be "replaced by another one that expresses our history, tradition and what we stand for". A spokesman for the Cypriot President confirmed that the song would not be withdrawn and referred to artistic freedom. Thereupon, because of the song, unknown people threatened to set fire to the headquarters of the Cypriot State Broadcasting Corporation ( RIK ). State television then stated that the song was not about paying homage to the devil, but about the struggle between good and evil and about the fact that a young woman wanted to break away from a man, a useless person. Furthermore, a man broke into the radio building of RIK, insulted employees and called the title an affront to Christianity due to supposed satanic connotations. In the end, the man was arrested by the police. The contribution was also criticized because the accompanying video is very similar to the music video Love Me Land by the Swedish pop singer Zara Larsson .
Disqualification of Belarus
In January 2021, the Belarusian Foundation for Cultural Solidarity launched a campaign with the aim of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) withdrawing the Belarusian state broadcaster Belaruskaja Tele-Radio Campanija (BTRC) from participating in the ESC 2021 and excluding it as an EBU member . The Swedish Liberalerna party also started a campaign to exclude Belarus from the ESC 2021, as did the group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) in the European Parliament . In February EBU General Director Noel Curran replied that the Eurovision Song Contest was a music competition without a political agenda. According to Curran, the EBU always aims not to instrumentalize the competition for political views.
On March 9, 2021, the state radio BTRC then published its contribution to the 2021 competition. The release of the song met with widespread criticism from the competition's fan base. The lyrics of Ya nauchu tebya are said to have a strong political context and thus violate the rules of competition. Thereupon fans started an online petition demanding the disqualification of the Belarusian entry; over 1,000 signatures were found within 24 hours. On March 10, 2021, some national and international Eurovision news sites such as Eurovoix opposed the Belarusian contribution and asked the EBU to disqualify the contribution.
On March 11, 2021, under the pressure of growing criticism, the EBU published a statement regarding Belarus, in which the Belarusian broadcaster BTRC was asked to change the text or to exchange the contribution. According to the EBU, Ya nauchu tebya's text violates the rules of competition. If BTRC does not comply with the request to submit a new version or a new song, the EBU will have to disqualify the country from the 2021 competition.
On March 12, 2021, the Norwegian head of the delegation, Stig Karlsen, announced that he was behind the EBU's decision to request a text change. The following day, the controversial President of Belarus, Aljaksandr Lukashenka, said: “You are now putting pressure on us from all sides. Even at Eurovision, I look at it. Who are these people there? Well, they just have more authority. As they say, good PR. Still, we will do a new song, no question about it. ”BTRC itself said that it would wait and only answer questions as soon as a decision had been made. On March 14, 2021, the lead singer of the Belarusian group Galasy ZMesta, Dmitry Butakov, said he did not find the text political. However, he didn't want to answer any questions about the song contest itself.
On March 26, 2021, the EBU announced that Belarus would not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. A second song by the band Galasy ZMesta with the title Pesnyu pro zaytsa ( Russian Песню про зайца ) was submitted within the agreed time frame, but was also judged by the EBU as not complying with the regulations. Since Belarus had not submitted a suitable entry within the deadline, it was disqualified. The head of the state television and radio company criticized this decision as politically motivated and spoke of an "absolute disgrace".
Controversy over music video from North Macedonia
The music video of the singer Vasil , which was filmed in the North Macedonian State Gallery and published on March 11, 2021, sparked a heated discussion about one of the works of art on display, which is reminiscent of the Bulgarian national colors of white, green and red. It was a work of art that was modeled on the Turin shroud and, after a renovation, was hung in the wrong order long before the shoot. In addition, a video from the previous year became known in which the singer spoke about his Bulgarian roots. This statement and the work of art caused some North Macedonians to cause a shit storm about Vasil. His sexual orientation, which was previously taboo , also made him a target for homophobic attacks. The video was edited to public pressure just a few days later and republished without the artwork.
On March 16, 2021, the singer took a position and made it clear that it was never his intention to hurt anyone. The broadcaster MRT announced on the same day that it would analyze the situation and announce the decision soon. It remained open whether the country would consider withdrawing or other consequences. At the same time, petitions were launched to build up official pressure and encourage the MRT to do the former. In the Bulgarian media it was reported that Vasil had been questioned by the North Macedonian state security regarding targeted pro-Bulgarian propaganda. It was the first time that a representative of an ethnic minority from North Macedonia was hostile to the ESC in his own country.
On March 23, the broadcaster announced that there would be no consequences and that Vasil would represent the country.
Criticism of the Russian contribution
After her victory in the preliminary round , the Russian representative Manizha faced great criticism in Russia. Among other things, it was criticized that she should not represent Russia because of her Tajik roots or that her song is not Russian enough. At the same time, others complained that the song was partly in Russian, which would worsen Russia's chances at the Eurovision Song Contest. The feminist message of the song Russian Woman was also criticized. Among other things, members of the Russian parliament criticized the “anti-Russian” message of the song. Subsequently, Manizha received support from some previous Russian ESC participants, such as the 2008 ESC winner, Dima Bilan , and the United Nations Refugee Commissioner , who welcomed Manizha, who had fled Tajikistan to Russia, to see Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest would represent. In an interview with the BBC on March 24, 2021, Manizha told of the hatred that hit her and death threats she had received.
Criticism of the Latvian music video
After the publication of Samanta Tīna's Latvian contribution , the hitherto little known musician Kaspars Pudniks started a petition calling for Tīna to be deposed as representative of Latvia. It is unacceptable that the video openly advertises LGBT rights and promotes their values and that it is unclear what goals the singer intends with the music video. The international audience should not be given the impression that LGBT people are welcome in Latvia. One has to protect the traditional family and the Latvian culture. According to Pudniks, if there had been a preliminary decision with a telephone vote, this post would not have been chosen. The video and text continued to contain satanic content. Pudniks asked the radio to remove the relevant images. In addition, a possible violation of the Latvian administrative law should be examined. At the end of March, Tīna reported that she had been charged because the content of the video was too erotic.
The radio then stood behind the singer and said that it was right to allow Samanta Tīna to participate in 2021 as well. The Facebook post in which Pudniks presented his views was removed a little later due to hate speech. The singer later said that she was always ready to listen to criticism but did not understand the hateful comments that were written about her on the internet. At no time did she harm anyone.
Rumor about drug use by the Italian front singer
After the points were awarded, a rumor spread that Måneskin's lead singer Damiano David had used cocaine . When asked about it at the press conference, he replied that one of the bandmates broke a glass and he wiped away the pieces, and that he was not going to use drugs. He announced that he would do a drug test. On May 24, 2021 it was confirmed that it was negative. The EBU confirmed this and expressed concern that such speculation and fake news would overshadow the spirit of the event.
miscellaneous
- Each country had to record a live-on-tape performance beforehand , which could be shown in the event that artists could not travel to Rotterdam. These recordings will be shown on May 29, 2021 as part of Eurovision Song Celebration: Live-On-Tape . On April 20, 2021 it was announced that the Australian delegation would not be able to arrive, which is why the live-on-tape version of the singer Montaigne was shown in the actual competition .

November 17, 2020, accessed on November 17, 2020 (English): "Under normal circumstances we would be looking forward to the Allocation Draw and Host Insignia Exchange Ceremony as an important milestone on the road to Rotterdam 2021. With the same participating countries as Last year, the Reference Group decided that it made sense for both ticket holders and for participating broadcasters to keep the same Semi-Final draws as 2020. Even though we won't have the traditional Ceremony in January we have plenty more planned to build excitement ahead of the return of the Eurovision Song Contest next year. "
