This article looks at the history of Georgia as a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest .

Regularity of participation and successes in competition

Sopho Nischaradze achieved Georgia's best result to date in 2010

Georgia first took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007. It was the second country from the Caucasus region to take part in the ESC, after which Armenia made its debut in 2006 . Georgia made its debut in 2007 with Sopo Chalwaschi , who immediately qualified for the final. There she reached 12th place, with which Georgia had a successful debut in the competition. In 2008, the country was able to qualify for the final. Diana Gurzkaja was able to top the result of 2007 by one place with 11th place. In 2009 the country then withdrew his participation, since the selected post by Stephane & 3G , entitled We Do not Wanna Put In violated the rules because of a political provocation against Vladimir Putin. In addition, participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 should initially be canceled due to the Caucasus War in 2008 . In 2010 Georgia returned to the competition.

Georgia was also able to qualify for the final in 2010 after Sopho Nischaradze finished third in the semi-finals. In the final, she achieved Georgia's 9th place, the best place in the competition to date. With 136 points, she also keeps Georgia's point record in the competition. In 2011 Grupe Eldrine was able to achieve 9th place, repeating the success of 2010. This successful period could not be continued in 2012. Anri Dschochadze only reached 14th place in the semifinals and was therefore unable to qualify for the final. He was the first Georgian interpreter who could not reach the final. After this failure, Sopo Gelowani & Nodiko Tatishvili were able to qualify for the final again in 2013. With 15th place they got an average placement for Georgia in the competition. In 2014, Georgia reached its lowest point in the competition. The Shin feat. Mariko Ebralidse could not qualify for the final and only reached the last place in the semifinals. With 14 points, they achieved Georgia's lowest score in the competition to date. In 2015, however, things went better for Georgia. Nina Sublatti was able to qualify for the final and, with 11th place, achieved the best position in four years. Also Nika Koscharow & Young Georgian Lolitaz could qualify for the finals in 2016. But they were less successful there than their predecessors and only got a mediocre placement for Georgia with 20th place. In 2017 Georgia failed to reach the final for the first time since 2014. With 11th place Tako Gatchetschiladze only just failed to qualify for the final. In 2018, the Georgian contribution was already eliminated in the semifinals. However, the band reached Iriao , like The Shin feat. Mariko Ebralidse 2014, only last place in the semifinals. Thus they repeated Georgia's worst place in the competition. In 2019, the final qualification was missed for the third time in a row.

In total, five of the 12 entries ended up in the left half of the table. In addition, the country has already been eliminated five times in the semi-finals and was twice last. Nevertheless, the country has already been placed in the top ten twice. This makes Georgia one of the average competitive countries. With only 12 participations, Georgia has not been participating for that long. In addition, the country has only suspended it once, namely in 2009.

National preliminary decisions

Most of the Georgian contributions were selected through a national preliminary decision. Only in 2013, 2014 and 2018 was there no preliminary decision and the contribution was nominated internally. However, there was often a mixture of internal selection and preliminary decision. Because the preliminary decisions of Georgia often took place under different systems.

2007, 2010 and 2016

At the debut in 2007, the artist was selected internally and the song was then selected in a preliminary round. This system also took place in 2010 and 2016. Sopo Nischaradze 2010 was selected internally, the song Shine in a public preliminary decision. In 2016, five contributions for Nika Koscharow & Young Georgian Lolitaz were selected from the submissions and presented to the audience in a TV broadcast, which could then vote on the Georgian contribution.

2008 and 2009

For the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade ( Serbia ) the candidate was selected on March 1st at a classic national preliminary decision in Tbilisi . It was won by the visually impaired singer Diana Gurzkaja with the song Peace Will Come . The 2009 interpreter was chosen following the same process.

2011, 2012, 2015 and 2017

In 2011 and 2012, the participant was selected by a preliminary decision with 8-10 participants. The 2015 preliminary decision, however, was held with only five participants. In 2017, 25 performers took part in the preliminary round.

2019 and 2020

In 2019, the Georgian interpreter and the accompanying song were selected for the first time via a casting show. The Georgian branch of Pop Idol Georgian Idol 2019 was responsible for this . This format followed in 2020 as the Georgian preliminary decision. The selection of the song was made internally this time.

languages

For the most part, Georgia sang in English . The first time a song contained Georgian text was in 2012. The 2012 post contained sentences in Georgian . In 2018 it was the first time that Georgia did not sing in English. The song was entirely in Georgian, so in 2018 Georgia sent a song entirely in Georgian for the first time. In 2019, the state again sent a contribution in the national language. In both years, however, the title of the song was introduced in English. In 2020, for the first time in three years, a song in English was selected, but a few lines in the song Take Me As I Am were sung in German , French , Italian and Spanish .
