This article deals with the history of Montenegro as a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest .

Participation before 2007

From 1961 to 1992, Montenegro took part in the competition as part of the SFR Yugoslavia . The then Montenegrin broadcaster "TV Titograd" made two Yugoslav contributions:

• 1983 - Daniel was able to convince with Džuli in Munich and achieved a good 4th place.
• 1984 - The following year, Vlado Kalember & Izolda with Ciao amore only came 18th in Luxembourg .

The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , which was formed by Montenegro and Serbia after the breakup of Yugoslavia, was banned by the EBU and could not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest from 1993 to 2003. After the establishment of Serbia and Montenegro , the two former republics were allowed to take part in the competition again in 2004.

Montenegro took part in the Eurovision Song Contest from 2004 to 2005 as part of Serbia and Montenegro . The Montenegrin television RTCG made the following contribution:

• 2005 - The group No Name took 7th place with Zauvijek moja in Kiev .

The pop group also prevailed in 2006, but was not sent to the international final. At the Evropesma , the Montenegrin jurors did not vote for songs from the Serbian part of the country, so that the favorites of the telephone vote only achieved second place. The Union of Public Service Broadcasters of Serbia and Montenegro did not recognize the group's victory. Since no compromise could be found, Serbia and Montenegro did not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 with any song , but only in the vote.

Regularity of participation and successes in competition

After the dissolution of the state of Serbia and Montenegro , Montenegro participated as a separate state for the first time in 2007. However, the debut was not very successful. Eventually, Stevan Faddy couldn't qualify for the final. Also in 2008 Stefan Filipović failed clearly to qualify for the final. In 2009, however, Andrea Demirović narrowly missed qualifying for the final with 11th place in the semifinals. In 2010, the Montenegrin Radio (RTCG) withdrew from the Eurovision Song Contest for financial reasons. In 2011, RTCG was initially placed on the provisional list of participants, but also canceled participation for financial reasons. Only in 2012 did Montenegro return to the competition.

But the return in 2012 was not very successful either. Rambo Amadeus only ended up in 15th place in the semifinals and thus missed the final. Also Who See feat. Nina Žižić was eliminated in the semifinals in 2013. In 2014, Montenegro's first success in the competition followed. Sergej Ćetković was the first Montenegrin interpreter to qualify for the final. With 19th place in the final, he got Montenegro's best result so far. In 2015, however, Montenegro was even more successful. Knez was also able to qualify for the final and, with 13th place in the final, got Montenegro's best result at the competition so far. In 2016 the band Highway could not continue this success. Montenegro was eliminated in the semi-finals for the first time since 2013. The entries from 2017, 2018 and 2019 could not qualify for the final either and only ended up in 16th place in the semifinals. After these failures, Montenegro withdrew from the 2020 competition due to unsuccessfulness and financial reasons.

Overall, only one of the 11 entries ended up in the left half of the table. In addition, the country has already been eliminated nine times in the semifinals, but has never finished last. With only two successful finals on average, Montenegro is one of the most unsuccessful countries in the competition.

National preliminary decisions

Most of the Montenegrin contributions were selected internally. Only in 2007, 2008, 2018 and 2019 was a national preliminary decision, which was organized in different formats.

MontenegroSong (2007 and 2008)

In 2007 the Montenegrin contribution was chosen in a preliminary decision called MontenegroSong . It comprised ten performers and was decided by a telephone vote. In 2008, the televoting decided the winner of the event, but in contrast to 2007, the song was later chosen by an internal jury.

Montevizija

In 2018, on February 17th, for the first time in ten years , a public preliminary decision with five contributions took place as part of the Montevizija . After the first round, three superfinalists were decided, with the winner being 100% determined by televoting. This system was also used in 2019, but in contrast to 2018, where all contributions were presented in Montenegrin, there was free choice of language for the preliminary decision in 2019.

languages

Most of the Montenegrin contributions were presented in the Montenegrin language . Only in 2009, 2016, 2017 and 2019 did the country sing completely in English . In 2012 Euro Neuro was sung in English, but it also contained a few lines in German and Montenegrin.

Award of the highest rating

Since 2007, Montenegro has awarded the highest number of points in the final to seven different countries, nine of which to Serbia. In the semifinals, however, Montenegro gave the highest number of points to seven different countries, four of them to Serbia.

• Until 2009, all Montenegrin interpreters took part at least once in the previous preliminary rounds of Montenegro or Serbia and Montenegro. All composers were also represented at least once in the international competition.
