Željko Joksimović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Жељко Јоксимовић ; born April 20, 1972 in Belgrade ) is a Serbian pop singer and composer .

Career

In 1984, at the age of 12, he became the first to win the First European Accordion in Paris .

In 1999 he released his first album, with which he won the Oscar Popularnosti and thus established himself with the largest Serbian record company City records . He worked closely with the singer Svetlana Slavković and later also with Leontina, who wrote the text for his ESC contribution Lane moje ( Mein Rehlein ).

In Serbia , Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina Joksimović became one of the most famous singers with the song Vreteno . In 2002 he released the album that gave him his final breakthrough.

He has also appeared on some Greek TV shows, such as the popular host Rula Koromila show on TV Alfa . In 2004 his biography Lično, Joksimović (Personal, Joksimović) was published. At the beginning of 2007 he received the award for the best composer of the last 10 years in Belgrade . He also arranges and sings traditional folk songs of the Bosnian Sevdalinka , such as Moj dilbere ( My Beloved ), whose text tells of a woman's longing and is therefore usually sung by women.

Participation in the Eurovision Song Contest

In Serbia the name Joksimović is associated with the Eurovision Song Contest, which is why he is often referred to as "Lane" in his home country, based on his first Eurovision contribution.

His greatest success so far was the second place at the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 in Istanbul , where he and Lane moje landed behind the song of the Ukrainian winner Ruslana . He had won the qualification in the semifinals before Ruslana. He was accompanied by his five-piece Ad Hoc Orchestra .

He successfully composes for other Serbian artists such as the singer Jelena Tomašević , who took part in the Serbian Eurovision preliminary decision Beovizija 2005 with his song Jutro (morning hour). She could decide this for herself. In the joint finale with the Montenegrin interpreters, however, the politics of the time thwarted her plans. The jury was made up of Serbian and Montenegrin experts. The judges from Montenegro ignored Jelena Tomašević's contribution as well as the contributions of most of the other Serbs and gave her zero points, which led to Montenegro's favorite group No Name winning the preliminary round.

However, this did not prevent Joksimović from continuing to participate as a composer in the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2006 he wrote the article for Bosnia-Herzegovina . The title of the song is Lejla and was interpreted by the group Hari Mata Hari in Athens . The song took 3rd place.

In 2008 Joksimović again submitted a song for Beovizija. Again he chose Jelena Tomašević as interpreter of his work. With the contribution Oro (Oro is a Serbian folk dance), for which Dejan Ivanović wrote the text, Jelena Tomašević got the highest rating of 12 points from both sides according to the new rating system (50% jury and 50% televoting) and left the competition well behind .

By winning the title Oro at the Beovizija, Željko was not only represented as a composer at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade, but also as a presenter. The organizer RTS selected him, together with Jovana Janković as a partner. His title Oro took 6th place in the victory of the Russian Dima Bilan .

Safura Alizadeh , the representative of Azerbaijan at the ESC 2010 , had Željko arrange a "Balkan version" of her song Drip Drop for better promotion .

For the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku , Joksimović was elected directly as the representative of Serbia by Serbian television. With the ballad Nije ljubav stvar sung in Serbian , he made it into the final two days later on May 24th. There he took third place behind the Swedish winner Loreen and the Russian Buranowskije Babuschki .

In 2004 for Lane moje and in 2006 for Lejla he was awarded the prize for best composition.

He composed the Montenegrin contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 .

Others

He can play at least eleven different instruments, including accordion, piano, guitar, and drums. Joksimović is married to TV presenter Jovana Janković for the second time and has a daughter from his first marriage. He has a son from his second marriage. In addition to his native Serbian, Joksimović speaks English, French, Russian, Greek and Polish.
