Conchita Wurst

Conchita at the Amadeus Award 2017

Thomas "Tom" Neuwirth (born November 6, 1988 in Gmunden ) is an Austrian singer and travesty artist . In 2014 Neuwirth won the 59th Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen as the fictional character Conchita Wurst with the piece Rise Like a Phoenix . He has appeared as two separate artificial characters Conchita and WURST since March 2019 .

life and career

Tom Neuwirth was born in Gmunden in Upper Austria in 1988 as the son of the innkeepers Helga and Siegfried Neuwirth and grew up in Bad Mitterndorf . In 2011 he completed an apprenticeship at the Graz Fashion School . After he was blackmailed, Neuwirth announced in April 2018 that he had been HIV- positive for many years . He received a lot of encouragement for this outing.

First career steps

Neuwirth participated in the 2006 third season of the TV talent show Starmania the ORF in part, in which he finished second to Nadine Beiler was. In 2007 he founded the boy band now differently together with Falco De Jong Luneau, Johannes "Johnny" K. Palmer and Martin Zerza ! which dissolved again in the same year.

Art figure "Conchita Wurst"

Since 2011 Neuwirth has appeared as drag queen Conchita Wurst and since 2015 as Conchita , a diva with a full beard . Her fictional biography begins with the birth in the mountains of Colombia and leads through a childhood in Germany to the beginning of the career as a singer in Austria. Neuwirth explains their creation as a reaction and statement against discrimination that he experienced in his youth due to his homosexuality . His appearance as Conchita should also lead to "that it is easier for young people - regardless of the reason why they are different from the others".

The diva got the name Conchita from a friend in Cuba and kept it. She chose the surname "because it's 'sausage' where you come from and how you look". When asked about his gender, Tom Neuwirth repeatedly stated in interviews that his portrayal of Conchita Wurst had nothing to do with transsexuality , his alter ego was simply a fictional character (“what we make fictional characters, as the name suggests, is art. …] But in the evening we still like to be in the body in which we were born ”). The beard distinguishes Conchita Wurst from other travesty figures, in which, as Doris Knecht observes, “the aim is to replace all supposedly male attributes with so-called female attributes. Conchita doesn't do that. She complements. She is a man-woman and a woman-man. In it the sexes mix, the differences blur. "For Neuwirth, the beard functions as a targeted provocation:

“The beard in particular is a means for me to polarize, to draw attention to myself. The world reacts to a woman with hair on her face. What I wish would be that people start thinking about my unusual appearance - about sexual orientation, but also about being different. Sometimes you just have to make it clear to people what it is all about. "

- Conchita Wurst : Courier, September 2013

The pastoral theologian Paul Zulehner and other commentators compare in their considerations of victory and its effect the appearance with depictions of Jesus in the romanticizing style of the Nazarenes and Pre-Raphaelites , while Pirmin Meier describes parallels to the fictitious holy sorrow . The Austrian sculptor Gerhard Goder , who lives in Berlin , created a wooden sculpture with the title Conchita Wurst on the crescent moon in 2014 , which is part of the Berlin Museum of European Cultures .

Neuwirth first became known in the role of “Conchita Wurst” in 2011 as a participant in the ORF talent show Die Große Chance , in which he finished sixth in the final round. As Conchita Wurst, he also took part in the Austrian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 ( Austria rocks the song contest ) and in the final with the song That's What I Am came in second with 49 percent of the votes behind Trackshittaz with 51 percent.

Further television appearances followed in 2013, when Conchita Wurst was seen in the program Die härtsten Jobs Österreichs on ORF eins , where he worked in fish processing , and in the summer of the same year in the program Wild Girls - Auf High Heels durch Afrika on RTL , in the he reached seventh place. In 2013 he was represented with the title That's What I Am together with a number of other Austrian musicians on the benefit album Licht ins Dunkel 2013 and at a concert for the ORF Christmas campaign Licht ins Dunkel .

Victory at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 and reactions

Conchita Wurst at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014

In September 2013, ORF announced that it would be sending Conchita Wurst as Austria's contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen. In the Austrian media, the decision not to hold a preliminary round was interpreted, among other things, as an expression of austerity constraints on the ORF. The decision was made by program director Kathrin Zechner from a dozen suggestions, and the candidate's potential is said to have been massively underestimated in-house until the end. The song Rise Like a Phoenix was first presented on March 18, 2014 on Ö3 . All record companies in Austria refused to publish the piece, so that the ORF was forced to publish the title itself.

On May 8, 2014 Conchita Wurst qualified in Copenhagen for the final of the competition, which she won on the night of May 11, 2014. The decision was followed by around 180 million viewers. It was the fourth best result in the history of the ESC and Austria's second victory at the ESC . At the award ceremony, Wurst said: “... This evening is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future in peace and freedom . You know who we are: we are a community and we are unstoppable. "

Criticism in advance

The cabaret artist and former ESC participant Alf Poier said that he could not do anything with his "gay Zumpferl romanticism", and the then FPÖ politician Heinz-Christian Strache polemicized against the ORF's posting of Wursts.

In Belarus , the "Legion Aljaksandr Lukashenka " called for a boycott of the Song Contest and a broadcast ban on the grounds that the popular international competition had degenerated into a "breeding ground for fornication" with the help of European liberals. The Polish politician Jarosław Kaczyński saw Conchita Wurst as the “decay of modern Europe”, and the Turkish parliamentarian Volkan Bozkir said that his country was glad not to have to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest anymore. In Russia, the politician Vitaly Milonov , initiator of the law against propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia passed in Saint Petersburg , which became the model for national legislation (see Homosexuality in Russia ), called for a boycott.

Conchita Wurst responded to the attacks with a message spread on Facebook that said:

“How would you feel if your friends, relatives, children, co-workers, etc., were insulted in this way? I am sure that there are also people in your immediate vicinity who are 'different'. In this sense, I continue to fight AGAINST discrimination and FOR tolerance. Because I am convinced that in the 21st century really EVERYONE has the right to live as they want, as long as no one else's freedom is restricted or injured. And as far as I know, I haven't hurt anyone. "

Reactions after the ESC

On May 11, 2014, Conchita was enthusiastically received by hundreds of fans on the occasion of her return from Copenhagen at Vienna International Airport . At the airport she gave a press conference broadcast live on television and radio. When asked in an interview about Russian President Putin and homophobia in Russia, Conchita replied: “I don't know if he's looking. But if so, I'll say very clearly: We are unstoppable. ”In Denmark she was referred to as Queen of Austria during the song contest and was announced by the moderator for her appearance in the semi-finals. This title was subsequently also taken up by the Austrian print media.

Cardinal Christoph Schönborn was also able to gain something positive from the figure and demanded respect for people who did not feel at home in their bodies. The surprising success of Wurst's is compared in the international media with the sudden appearance of Paul Potts and Susan Boyle with their comparable song I Dreamed a Dream , by Leona Lewis or the Italian nun sister Cristina Scuccia . In all cases it is comparable to the fact that they are so-called underdogs , marginalized people or members of minorities who, thanks to their vocal performance, were able to suddenly overcome all forms of discrimination and gain massive support from broad sections of the population.

Austria's only Eurovision Song Contest winner until then, Udo Juergens , who was successful with Merci, Chérie in 1966 , praised the song as "a well-composed song with a beautiful musical arc". Cher congratulated as well as Julio Iglesias . Elton John and his partner David Furnish sent Conchita Wurst flowers and a card that read "We love you" in the cloakroom when she appeared on Graham Norton's BBC show on May 15, 2014 .

Conchita, 2015

On May 18, 2014, Federal Chancellor Werner Faymann invited Conchita Wurst to the Federal Chancellery . She then sang in front of around 10,000 listeners on Ballhausplatz . The song Rise Like a Phoenix made it into the top ten in seven countries and number one in the charts in Austria. On May 31, 2014 Conchita Wurst performed as part of the Life Ball during the opening show on Rathausplatz and in the arcade courtyard of the Vienna City Hall . Wurst has been taking part in the event for the benefit of people infected with HIV since 2006. At the beginning of July Wurst was seen on the catwalk in Paris at Jean Paul Gaultier's presentation of his autumn / winter collection.

On October 8 of the same year, Conchita Wurst sang in front of politicians from all over Europe on the Esplanade Solidarnosc in front of the EU Parliament in Brussels at the invitation of the Vice President of the EU Parliament Ulrike Lunacek . Since October 2014 she has been an advertising medium for Bank Austria . Conchita Wurst was also named Communicator of the Year 2014 by the Public Relations Association Austria . In December 2014, Conchita Wurst was named People of the Year by the news magazine Profil - together with Russian President Vladimir Putin .

On May 15, 2015, she released her debut album Conchita , which went platinum just a few days after its release in Austria and also entered the charts in other European countries and Australia.

At the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna, Conchita appeared again with Rise Like a Phoenix in the course of the first semi-final and acted as a presenter in the Green Room. She was also involved in the opening song Building Bridges . In March 2016, she performed with other drag artists and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House .

At the Amadeus Austrian Music Award 2016 Conchita was again named Artist of the Year . Then Conchita went on her first tour through Austria, Germany and Switzerland with the band. At the beginning of 2017, she was on RTL as a juror in the talent show It Takes 2 . In 2017 she moderated the Life Ball together with Verena Scheitz and in 2018 the Amadeus Austrian Music Award . In 2018 Conchita moderated there again, this time together with Herbert Föttinger .

Second album: From Vienna with Love

After the joint opening of the 2017 Wiener Festspiele, an album by Conchita and the Wiener Symphoniker was released in October 2018 with the title From Vienna With Love . In June 2018, a reinterpretation of The Sound of Music from the film of the same name was released as a single. In September followed the second single Für mich's shall's red roses rain , a cover version of Hildegard Knef 's song of the same name.

In February 2019, Tom Neuwirth caused a stir when he appeared in his fictional character Conchita (as before at the Grazer Tuntenball ) at the invitation of Justice Minister Josef Moser ( ÖVP ) at the Vienna Opera Ball with a bald head and a wide-cut latex dress. Especially FPÖ politicians criticized the performance heavily. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, on the other hand, was happy about Conchita Wurst's visit and was enthusiastic about the artist's “completely changed outfit”.

At the Festival of Joy 2019
Conchita / Wurst (2019)

At the Festival of Joy 2019, Conchita sang the European anthem . At the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv , Conchita performed as an interval act together with other former participants . He sang Måns Zelmerlöw's winning song Heroes .

In 2019 Conchita again hosted the Amadeus Awards , and also the Life Ball - this time with Andy Warhol - Muse Dianne Brill .

Image change

In 2019 Tom Neuwirth announced that he would do a new project under the name WURST Elektropop . During the image change, he put his male side in the foreground as a sausage. He did without wigs and appeared at events in a fetish outfit instead of clothes. The album TOM - Truth Over Magnitude was released in autumn 2019. At the end of 2019, Conchita Wurst sat next to Heidi Klum and Bill Kaulitz on the jury of the ProSieben show Queen of Drags . For the first time, Neuwirth will not present the program “FameMaker” as a fictional character “ Conchita Wurst” together with Viviane Geppert . The program is currently being produced by Stefan Raab for ProSieben.
