Tony Wegas (Vienna 2009)

Tony Wegas (born May 3, 1965 in Unterschützen, Burgenland , actually Anton Hans Sarközi, later also Anton Hiller ) is an Austrian singer and musician .

Life

Wegas was born into a "typical Roma family" in Unterschützen in Burgenland , as he himself says. Motivated by his father, who was a musician himself, he learned the instruments guitar, piano, drums, bass and pan flute. Wegas had musical success early on when he toured Europe with various show bands.

He achieved great fame through his two participations in the Eurovision Song Contest for Austria. At the 1992 Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden he reached 10th place with the title Together, composed by Dieter Bohlen , at the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest in Ireland he came 14th with Maria Magdalena (background vocals by Gary Lux ). The image of a pop singer that was attached to him was not always right for him; his musical roots are more in Latino music. The singer was also seen on the Austrian program Tohuwabohu .

In the years that followed, Wegas had increasing problems with drugs such as alcohol, cocaine and heroin. Finally, in April 1997, he was jailed for 30 months for cocaine use and two handbag thefts. After his release on October 1, 1999, he and his ex-therapist Andreas Mauerer published the autobiographical book soberly considered . In 2004 he had a guest appearance in the television series Commissioner Rex (episode: The Danube Crocodile ).

Tony Wegas was married three times (with the actress Sabine Petzl , with a banker and with a Viennese doctor). He lived with the latter in Zurich and has a daughter. Wegas lives in Vienna today.

In June 2007 bankruptcy proceedings were opened, which ended in October of the same year.

On April 12, 2017, he had an appearance on the ORF breakfast television Guten Morgen Österreich in Mönichkirchen (Lower Austria). On November 14, 2019, the play Caruso. I Did It My Wegas premiere in the Offenen Haus Oberwart . Wegas can be seen in the title role of the Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso .
