Kommissar Rex is an Austrian crime series that takes place in Vienna and always features the police dog Rex . The series was shot from 1994 to 2004 in several seasons with three different casts. From 2007 to 2015, the series for the Rai in Rome was completely re-produced in Italian, with Italian actors and also with a service dog. The first English-language adaptation with the title Hudson & Rex was produced for the Canadian TV broadcaster CityTv and aired from March 2019.
Rex is a German Shepherd Dog with the full name Reginald von Ravenhorst . So far, five sheepdogs have played the role of Rex: including BJ, Rhett and Henry, each trained by the US dog trainer Teresa Ann Miller.
Plot and characters
Rex
Reginald von Ravenhorst, called Rex, is a trained police dog . He is the focus of the action and often helps the investigation by finding pieces of evidence and people. Rex was stolen by criminals as a puppy and helped a child solve a case as a cub. In the first season he lives with Inspector Moser in Moroccanergasse 18 in the third district of Vienna, in the second season in Vienna's green belt . Rex has a preference for sausage rolls ( Kaisersemmel with sausage) and always shows this in the series.
Chief investigator
Detective Inspector Richard "Richie" Moser †
Detective Inspector Richard Moser, occupied by Tobias Moretti , is the series' first operations manager. At the beginning of the series, he divorces his wife Gina, which is a tough blow for him. He takes Rex, whose owner was shot. In season 1, Moser lives in an old apartment in the (actually existing) Moroccanergasse 18 in the 3rd district of Vienna , but rents a house in the second season, which he is renovating. Initially, Moser owned an anthracite-colored Alfa Romeo 155 , and later an Audi A4 in the first episodes of the fourth season. Characteristic of Moser are his sense of humor, his sometimes quick-tempered disposition and the encounters with many women who are interested in him. In the meantime he has a relationship with Rex's vet Sonja Koller (played by Daniela Gäts ), who later leaves him and goes to the USA. Moser last appeared in the episode "Moser's Death" and was shot there by a psychopath (played by Ulrich Tukur ) while trying to protect his girlfriend from him.
Moser appeared in seasons 1 to 3 and in the first four episodes of season 4.
Criminal Inspector Alexander "Alex" Brandtner
Alex Brandtner replaces Moser as detective inspector and owner of Rex. After seeing how dejected the dog is clearly - Rex stays in the house for a few days after Moser's death, but eats, drinks and hardly sleeps anymore - he takes over the apartment building and moves in with Rex. Brandtner previously owned a dog named Arco, who died in an explosion. Brandtner retained a slight hearing loss from this explosion . Actually he didn't want to have anything to do with dogs until he got to know Rex. Compared to Moser, Brandtner is portrayed in the series as a bit sportier and more active at work. An example of this is working as an undercover agent in a prison. It has not occurred since 2002 without an explanation.
Alexander Brandtner was played by Gedeon Burkhard in seasons 4 to 7 . In the first season Burkhard had a guest appearance in episode 9 ("Amok"), but as a criminal.
Criminal Inspector Marc Hoffmann
Detective Inspector Hoffmann replaces his predecessor and is - like his predecessors - portrayed as humorous and witty and even sportier. He works with Niki Herzog, with whom he builds a love relationship after initial differences of opinion. He studied forensic science under Leo Graf, the coroner.
Marc Hoffmann (the role appeared in seasons 8-10 ) was played by Alexander Pschill ; in the 2nd episode of the 2nd season he had a guest appearance.
Commissioner Lorenzo Fabbri †
In the Italian season, Lorenzo Fabbri is the chief detective , who travels from Rome to Vienna in the first episode to solve a double murder with the Austrian police . When he travels to Rome again, he takes Rex with him. He has made friends with the commissioner in a short time. The inspector loves Bach and rock music from the seventies. Even in everyday life, Fabbri always wears a black jacket and, like Richard Moser, drives an Alfa Romeo in the first seasons . Forensic technician Katia Martelli is in love with him, Fabbri dies in the second episode of season 14 from a car bomb. Lorenzo Fabbri was played by Kaspar Capparoni and played from seasons 11 to 13 and in the first two episodes of season 14 with, his successor was Davide Riviera. In the German dubbed version, Capparoni was voiced by Michael Iwannek .
Commissioner Davide Riviera
Davide Riviera is the somewhat younger successor to Lorenzo Fabbri and takes in Rex, they both become a good team. Marco Terzani is his successor. At the beginning of the 16th season, his exit is not explained.
Commissioner Marco Terzani
Marco Terzani replaces Davide Riviera at the beginning of season 16, he is athletic and quickly makes friends with Rex.
Secondary investigator
District inspector Ernst "Stocki" Stockinger
Ernst Stockinger is a district inspector and Richard Moser's assistant. He loves sausage rolls as much as Moser and Rex. Characteristic of Stockinger is his panic fear of dogs. This is clearly visible in the pilot of the series. with the beginning of the second season, shortly before he leaves the series, he overcomes his fear of Rex and the affection for him becomes clearly evident. He has a wife who is only mentioned in conversations. Physically, she (played by Anja Schiller ) only appears in the Stockinger spin-off . In 1996 Stockinger moved to Salzburg with his wife , as she took over her late father's medical practice there. In this context he changes from the criminal police corps of the federal security guard corps to the state police command in Salzburg. Christian Böck is his successor.
Ernst Stockinger was played by Karl Markovics in seasons 1 and 2.
Criminal inspector a. D. Max Koch
Max Koch was a detective inspector and is retired. In the pilot it is mentioned that he once brought Richard Moser to the police, supports him and his team in investigations and is at his side with advice and action. Max leaves the series without further explanation after Richard is shot. Max Koch was portrayed by Fritz Muliar (1919-2009) in seasons 1–3 and the first 4 episodes of season 4, although he did not appear in every episode. In some episodes Koch only appeared briefly, in others, however, he played a key role in the investigation and the apprehension of the perpetrator. B. by "undercover" investigations.
Criminal Inspector Peter Höllerer
Peter Höllerer was the assistant to Richard Moser and Ernst Stockinger, and later to Alexander Brandtner and Christian Böck, and thus the predecessor of Fritz Kunz. Like him, he prefers the cosiness in the office. He leaves the series in the episode Rex takes revenge because he wants to continue running his father's restaurant with his mother. He has a short guest appearance in two episodes in the spin-off Stockinger .
Peter Höllerer was portrayed by Wolf Bachofner in seasons 1 to 5 .
Criminal Inspector Christian Böck
Christian Böck is a criminal inspector and the direct successor to Stockinger. He also loves sausage rolls like Brandtner and the others. Like Brandtner, he has not appeared in the series since 2002 without further explanation. His successor is Niki Herzog.
Böck was played by Heinz Weixelbraun in seasons 3 to 7 . In episode 1 of season 3, he pretends to be Christian Schuh to investigate undercover.
Criminal Inspector Niki Herzog
Niki Herzog is a martial artist. Niki and Marc are lovers at the beginning, which you can see very clearly in the eighth season. It no longer appears in the episode A Man Without Memory ; the reasons for this are unknown.
Elke Winkens played this role in seasons 8 and 9. In the 7th season (episode 1: In the last second), she already had a guest appearance in another role.
Criminal Inspector (later Major) Fritz Kunz
Fritz Kunz is a criminal inspector and was the assistant to the criminal inspectors Brandtner and Hoffmann. He loves sausage rolls and is the third man on the team who likes it more relaxed. Kunz is a fanatic of order and shows great enthusiasm for statistics.
He played in seasons 6 to 10 as well as in the pilot episode of the 11th season, in which his boss is Commissioner Erika Herdl ( Denise Zich ). In the episode A Fatal Match of the 13th season, Fritz Kunz is also there; here he holds the rank of major .
Fritz Kunz is portrayed by Martin Weinek .
Forensic Doctors / Forensics / Pathologists
Dr. Leo Graf
Dr. Graf is as coroners worked. With his forensic knowledge he often helps Rex and his masters to find the right track to the murderer. His somewhat black humor was also characteristic of him . He made a brief guest appearance in the first episode of the Stockinger spin-off .
He plays in seasons 1–10 and is there the longest. In the 13th season he reappears in the episode A Deadly Match .
The game was Dr. Leo Graf until 2009 from Gerhard Zemann (1940–2010).
Dr. Giorgio Gaiba
Dr. Gaiba is the Roman coroner who works closely with Katia Martelli (played by Pilar Abella ). He and Katia are usually the first to arrive at the crime scene.
Nuccio Siano plays Dr. Giorgio Gaiba since season 11; unlike Katia Martelli, however, he does not appear regularly in all episodes.
Securing of evidence (forensic science)
Since Commissioner Rex has been investigating in Rome, forensic evidence security (Spusi) has played a strong role, especially since it is female and the chief commissioner is a heartthrob.
Katia Martelli
Pilar Abella has played the role of forensic scientist Katia Martelli since Rex was investigated in Rome. Together with Commissioner Lorenzo Fabbri and his colleague Chief Inspector Morini, she will leave after the death of Commissioner Fabbri. In the German dubbed version, Abella was voiced by Natascha Geisler .
production
The series began in 1994 on Austrian and German television as a parallel broadcast. At that time, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, which had commissioned the production, showed the program on ORF 1 . In Germany, the series was broadcast on Sat.1 . Commissioner Rex was produced until 2004 by the Austrian film production company "Mungo-Film". This also produced the spin-off film "Baby Rex - Der kleine Kommissar", which was broadcast on Sat.1 in 1997, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel . Hirschbiegel also directed a total of 14 episodes in the series' first three seasons from 1994 to 1997.
Prominent locations in Vienna have included the Haas House , the Vienna Secession (opening), the Natural History Museum , the Vienna City Park , the Favoritner water tower , the United Nations headquarters , the historic rail line on the belt, and in the footsteps of the third man , the Vienna sewer system. Numerous scenes also take place in the area around Vienna, from the vineyards in the south to the Bisamberg in the northeast.
The main actor in the first four seasons was Tobias Moretti. Some of the seasons reached over 10 million viewers. Moretti dropped out of the series in 1998 and was replaced by Gedeon Burkhard. The viewership remained substantial and the rights to the crime series were sold to television stations in over 107 countries. After Burkhard had left the series for personal reasons, there was a break in broadcasting. In the following season, the main roles were cast with Alexander Pschill and, for the first time, a commissioner, Elke Winkens , who also had a love affair in the script. Despite the drastic drop in audience ratings, 15 more episodes were filmed. The last episodes were only broadcast on ORF 1 .
In January 2007, after a three-year break, filming began for a new season with different omens. The season has now been produced by Jan Mojtos Beta Film GmbH in collaboration with Leader Production SRL for the Italian public broadcaster Rai 1 with the participation of ORF and ZDF , and is directed by Marco Serafini . In the first episodes of the Italian season, a somewhat aged Martin Weinek from the last Viennese investigative group forms a bridge to the new location and the new circumstances. The new commissioner is Lorenzo Fabbri, played by the Italian actor Kaspar Capparoni . The new German Shepherd (Rex III) is called Henry and is of American descent. The not very original scenario in Italy instead of the Viennese backdrop and the many innovations in the style of American crime series (scene repetitions in the form of flashbacks , static camera work without pans, etc.) met with rejection from the Italian television audience, according to the Italian consumer association.
The eight episodes of the 11th season were broadcast in Italy in 2008 under the title Rex, il ritorno ( Rex - The Return ) on RAI 1 . The ORF 1 showed from 30 June 2009 to August 2009. In Germany, radiates ZDF from the new episodes since July 9, 2009. The German synchronization is produced by Bavaria Synchron in Munich . The pilot film was very well received in Germany, but the subsequent episodes did not achieve any further ratings . Since May 1, 2010, ZDF 20 has been broadcasting new episodes of seasons 11 and 12.
Despite an announcement by the ORF that the location of the series would be moved back to Vienna, another ten episodes of a 12th season were shot in Rome in 2008. At the end of May 2008 it became known that the ORF was producing a film for the 13th season again in Vienna. Accordingly, the shooting took place during the European Football Championship in 2008. The film with the title "Ein tödliches Match / L'ultima partita " is the pilot film of the 13th season and ran on April 12, 2009 on RAI. After the thirteenth season was broadcast in summer 2010 on ZDF and in summer 2011 on Rai, it was announced that Kaspar Capparoni would give up his role at the beginning of the fourteenth season. Instead, Ettore Bassi will become Rex's new commissioner. The fourteenth season comprises twelve episodes and was originally scheduled to air on Rai 1 in 2012. As with season 13, however, the broadcast was postponed by the station and the rights were initially sold abroad. The episodes ran for the first time in 2011 with an Italian soundtrack on the Russian broadcaster Semyorka (“Kanal 7”).
In 2013, ORF and RAI produced a new full-length episode entitled Kommissar Rex - Eiszeit . The director was Erhard Riedlsperger from Salzburg . The filming and action location is Merano in South Tyrol . Rex is embodied by the shepherd dogs Aki and Tokyo and Juergen Maurer ( The Miracle of Carinthia ) plays the new investigator Andreas Mitterer . It was first broadcast on ORF 2 on December 21, 2013. It is not yet known whether the film was just a spin-off or the pilot film for a new season.

Others
The rank of " Kommissar " does not correspond to a rank of the Austrian police , otherwise, in contrast to crime series such as Derrick or Der Alte, many elements of modern police work and new forms of crime were adopted and brought to a broad audience in detailed camera settings (for example, inquiries in the criminal police files, Face morphing on the computer, organized forced begging of Eastern European orphans, etc.).
Gedeon Burkhard, the second employer of Rex, already played in the episode "Amok" of the first season. He played the murderer Stefan Lanz. During the filming of this episode it was found that the acting dog BJ (Rex) worked very well with Gedeon Burkhard, which is why Burkhard was later given the role of commissioner.
The later leading actors Alexander Pschill ("Blood Traces") and Elke Winkens ("In the Last Second") also starred in earlier seasons of the series as leading actors in the episode.
