TV Markíza is the largest private TV broadcaster in Slovakia . It was founded on August 31, 1996 and soon after became the most watched broadcaster in Slovakia and still is today. The station belongs to the media group CME.

Markíza was founded by the co-owner and politician Pavol Rusko of the liberal party Aliancia nového občana (ANO), who later used the station as an instrument to fight his political opponents. After several scandals he was asked to sell his shares. Today Markíza belongs to the empire of the CME , which operates numerous broadcasters in Central and Eastern Europe. The general director ( CEO ) is currently Matthias Settele.

The program is based on the experiences of American television and shows predominantly feature films, shows and quiz programs, mostly of American origin, but also produces its own, such as the election for Miss Slovakia or the weekly show Laskanie , a lifestyle and erotic magazine , which was moderated at times by Kyla Cole . Together with the Czech broadcaster TV Nova , Markíza produces the show Česko Slovenská SuperStar .
