The Alfa Romeo 155 is a notchback sedan of the middle class , which the Italian Fiat Corporation under car brand Alfa Romeo built by the beginning of 1992 to the spring of the 1998th

General

In contrast to its rear-wheel drive predecessor Alfa 75, the Alfa 155 has front-wheel drive with a transversely installed engine. The only exception is the Q4 version, which, like the racing car, is four-wheel-drive and has a four-cylinder in-line engine with turbocharging. The 155 is based on the Tipo platform . Fiat used them in several models, some of which were adapted in detail depending on the model and engine: Tipo (Type 160) ("original platform"), Fiat Tempra , Fiat Coupé , Bravo , Brava , Marea , Multipla , Lancia Delta II and Dedra as well as Alfa Romeo 145 , 146 , Alfa Romeo 155, Spider and GTV and also slightly modified in the 155 successor Alfa Romeo 156 . For the V6 and Q4 engine variants, the 155 was also available with an electronically controlled damper system with two settings (automatic and sport).

The four-door notchback body of the 155 was designed by the Turin design studio I.DE.A Institute ; the responsible designer was Ercole Spada .

Model history

In January 1992, the Alfa 155 came with two four-cylinder - twin-spark engines (1.8 l with 95 kW (129 hp) and 2.0 l of 106 kW (144 hp)) and a 2.5-liter six-cylinder with 121 kW (165 PS) on the market. The 155 Q4 introduced in autumn 1992 received permanent all-wheel drive , three differentials (normal on the front axle, epicyclic including a Ferguson viscous coupling in the middle, self-locking Torsen differential on the rear axle ) and a 2.0-liter 16V four-cylinder turbo engine with 140 kW (190 PS).

From April 1993, there was also a choice of a smaller twin-spark engine with a displacement of 1.7 liters and 85 kW (116 hp) or two turbo diesels with 66 kW (90 hp) and 92 kW (125 hp), and passive safety was also introduced elevated.

After three years, a slight facelift was carried out in March 1995 with flared fenders and a modified front. Another new feature was a 2.0-liter 16V twin spark with an adjustable intake camshaft and 110 kW (150 hp).

The interior was modified in May 1996 and the 1.7-l and 1.8-l engines were replaced by four-valve engines with twin ignition (twin-spark) and 1.6 or 1.8 liter displacement, the 88 kW (120 PS , 1.6 l) and 103 kW (140 PS, 1.8 l). The 2.5-liter V6 was deleted without replacement.

In September 1997 the successor 156 was brought onto the market. Production of the 155 ended in early 1998.

Engines

At the start of series production, the Alfa 155 was equipped with engines that were derived from the classic Alfa four-cylinder. These engines have two chain-driven overhead camshafts, two valves per cylinder and an engine block made of aluminum. They are equipped with double ignition, hence the name "Twin Spark". The cylinder heads were based on those of the racing engines of the 1970s and had a narrower valve angle than the classic Alfa engine. An exception was the 155 Q4 , the drive mechanism of which was completely taken over from the Lancia Delta HF Integrale and therefore the supercharged Lampredi four-cylinder from Fiat with two camshafts driven by a toothed belt.

Later, the Alfa 155 was equipped with the engines derived from Fiat's "modular" design range. They had a cast iron engine block, toothed belt driven camshafts, four valves per cylinder and double ignition. In contrast to the Alfa engines used previously, the spark plugs were of different sizes and did not ignite at the same time. Rather, the smaller, laterally screwed-in candle ignited in the exhaust cycle to improve exhaust emissions.

The 155 in motorsport

After a successful first season in 1992, in which the racing drivers Alessandro Nannini and Nicola Larini confidently won the Italian Touring Car Championship in a 155 equipped with a 2-liter turbo four-cylinder , the first 155, now with a V6 engine, were released Used in the German touring car championship DTM in 1993 . Larini won the championship right away and laid the foundation for a long, extremely successful career for the 155 in motorsport.
