Alfa Romeo 2600 is the type designation for a series of passenger cars produced by the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo from the beginning of 1961 to autumn 1969 .

history

The 2600 models were the successors to the Alfa Romeo 2000 series . Back then, the market wanted a higher engine output for the relatively heavy 2000s. The body of the predecessor has been changed slightly, mainly to make room for the larger engine.

The Alfa Romeo 2600 was initially built in the following variants:

  • "Spider" (type 106.01, open 2 + 2 seater): manufactured from 01.1961 by Carrozzeria Touring .
  • "Berlina" (type 106.00, four-door sedan): manufactured from 01.1962 in the Alfa Romeo factory in Portello and later in Arese .
  • "Sprint" (type 106.02, two-door coupé): manufactured by Bertone from 01.1962 .

In the summer of 1965 another, more sporty coupé appeared with the 2600 Zagato (type 106.12) and with the 2600 OSI (type 106.16) an additional luxuriously equipped sedan. Production ended in autumn 1967. The body of the 2600 Zagato is made of sheet steel and not, as is usual with Zagato, of aluminum.

technology

The engine was a new development: in-line six-cylinder with aluminum block, 2584 cm³, 145 hp (Berlina: 130 hp), two overhead camshafts , three register carburetors (Berlina only two). The top speed was 200 km / h or 175 km / h for the Berlina. Like their predecessors, the 2600 series was equipped with a five-speed gearbox. Disc brakes were used on the front wheels . In the course of a model upgrade that took place in autumn 1963, the rear wheels were also given disc brakes.

For the conditions at the time, the prices of all 2600 models were relatively high (Sprint 1962: 25,000 DM / 155,000 ÖS / 26,000 CHF) and for this reason, too, the number of units sold was relatively low, although in the literature as well slightly different numbers appear.

successor

At the end of 1965, production of the 2600 Spider was stopped. The Sprint followed at the end of 1966, while production of the Berlina ended in autumn 1969.

At first there was no successor with a six-cylinder engine. It was not until the spring of 1979 that a "big Alfa" appeared again with the Alfa 6 , albeit with a V6 engine. Today, apart from the Berlina, which has almost completely disappeared, the models of the 2600 series are popular oldtimers , which, in addition to their attractive design, are characterized by what was then very advanced technology.
