The Alfa Romeo Arna was a hatchback sedan with three or five doors that was manufactured by Alfa Romeo in cooperation with the Japanese car maker Nissan from autumn 1983 to late 1986 . The name goes back to the initials of Alfa Romeo Nissan Automobili , the name of the joint venture .

This joint venture was founded because at that time Italy had very restrictive quota regulations for the import of Japanese vehicles. To get around these quotations, Nissan was looking for an Italian cooperation partner. This then had to contribute a certain share of the value of the vehicle so that the manufactured product was considered Italian.

The vehicle was presented in September 1983 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. It should complement the model range downwards and partly take over the successor of the aging Alfasud model .

Its basic construction comes from the Nissan Cherry and Pulsar models . The engine, drivetrain and front suspension came from Alfa Romeo. The vehicle was offered in engine variants with 1200, 1400 and 1500 cc with an output of 63 to 95 hp. The body shell was manufactured by Nissan in Japan and then shipped to the newly established Alfa Romeo factory in Pratola Serra . There the vehicles were completed.

In some markets, the Arna was also sold as Nissan Cherry Europe or Nissan Cherry Europe .

For the “Alfa Romeo” brand, the Arna marked a low point in the brand's history in terms of design and technology. It is seen as a sign of the company's economic decline at the time.

In December 1986, the state-owned company Alfa Romeo was taken over by Fiat . The production of the Arna was then stopped. With 53,047 units produced, the car was an economic flop for Alfa Romeo.

Engines

The Arna was available with four different gasoline-powered boxer engines . The power range went from 46 to 70 kW (63–95 hp). The more powerful versions were called Ti .
