history

The Normal School on Gould St. in 1856
Egerton Ryerson (1803-1882)

In 1852, Egerton Ryerson founded Ontario's first teacher training facility, the Toronto Normal School, on what is now Ontario's main campus. This included the Department of Education and the Museum of Natural History and Fine Arts, which was converted into the Royal Ontario Museum . An agricultural laboratory located on the premises led to the establishment of the Ontario Agricultural College and the University of Guelph . Egerton Ryerson was a leading teacher, politician, and publicist. He is considered to be the founder of the public education system in Ontario. He was also the founder of the first media company in Canada in 1829. The Methodist Book and Publishing House , which was renamed The Ryerson Press in 1919 , is now part of McGraw-Hill Ryerson Verlag, a publisher that markets textbooks worldwide. The Toronto Training and Re-establishment Institute was founded in 1945. It served as a training facility for the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II . The facility was an amalgamation of the government and provincial government and served to integrate retired soldiers into civil life. The Ryerson Institute of Technology was founded in 1948. In 1966 this institute was renamed the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute . In 1971 the institute received accreditation from the state regulatory agencies to a provincial government and from the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). In the same year the institute became a member of the Council of Ontario Universities (COU). In 1992 Ryerson received Toronto's Second School of Engineering with accreditation from the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. In 1993 the university received approval for master’s courses and the right to award doctorates.
