The Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) is a Canadian university in the city Waterloo (province of Ontario ).

The current university was founded in 1911 as an Evangelical Lutheran educational institution, the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary . Later the name changed several times. In 1973 it was renamed from Waterloo Lutheran University to Wilfrid Laurier University . The namesake is the former Canadian Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier .

The number of students has risen sharply for several years, so that a second campus has now been built in Brantford.

University sports

The university teams compete as Laurier Golden Hawks in various OUA leagues . Only the women's ice hockey team plays in the RSEQ .

In 2005, the men's football team of the WLU won the Vanier Cup (Canadian university championship of the CIS ) for the second time . Other successful programs are women's ice hockey with numerous provincial championships, the women's curling team and the two soccer teams with numerous national titles.
