Advanced Technology & Academic Center

Lakehead University developed out of the Lakehead Technical Institute and the Lakehead College of Arts, Science, and Technology , which was founded in 1957. Teaching began on June 4, 1946, with approval from the Ontario Provincial Government. Initially, teaching took place in makeshift rooms in downtown Port Arthur. In September of the same year, the first university courses were added to the curriculum.

The Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology was established by the approval of the provincial government on 1 August 1957th A few years later the college expanded and newer courses were approved. On July 1, 1965, the Lakehead Technical Institute and the Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology were merged and the name was changed to today's.
