The Concordia University is an English-language university in Montreal and one of the younger universities in Canada. With around 40,000 students, it is the sixth largest university in the country in terms of the number of students.
According to a ranking by the École des Mines de Paris , Concordia University ranks seventh among Canadian universities and 33rd worldwide, based on the number of graduates who become CEOs in one of the Fortune 500 companies .
The university is home to the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema , at which around 200 students enroll each year; it is the largest film academy of its kind in Canada.
history
The university was founded in 1974 when two colleges merged: Loyola College, founded by the Jesuits in 1896, and Sir George Williams University , which received university status in 1948 . Sir George Williams University became known nationwide when about 200 students occupied the university's computer lab from January 29 to February 11, 1969 ( Sir George Williams Computer Riot ). Approximately $ 2 million worth of equipment was destroyed and 97 students were arrested.
Faculties
Faculty of Arts and Science
The largest faculty at the university includes 26 departments and colleges with approximately 15,000 students. With the newly recruited professors over the last few years and the modern redesign of the facilities, the humanities, natural sciences and social sciences are researched and taught here.
Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science
One of the largest faculties for technology and computer science offers various courses in engineering (electrical engineering, civil engineering, etc.) and computer science.
Faculty of Fine Arts
Teachers are both full-time professors and part-time teachers.
School of Graduate Studies
With over 100 programs, the Faculty for Postgraduate Studies offers a variety for specialized PhD, Master, Diploma and Certificate degrees.
School of Extended Learning
This typical North American institution offers training opportunities to various target groups. Enrolled students and outsiders can obtain further training by taking "e-learning" courses, university preparatory and further training courses and courses for professional training or further education.
John Molson School of Business
The Business School of Concordia University (JMSB) bears the name of the entrepreneur John Molson (1763-1836), who immigrated to Canada, and whose family donated $ 20 million in November 2000 to build the JMSB. The John Molson School of Business is one of the most up-and-coming and already leading Canadian business schools, as evidenced by various rankings as well as the accreditation of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business .
The faculty has a particularly good reputation in the area of portfolio management, which is also noticeable in the design of the new building. The students have “trading desks” in the “Formula Growth Trading Lab” at which investment strategies can be developed and tried out. In addition, the university relies on seminars that are intended to impart the necessary knowledge of the standard software to the students in order to enable an optimal career start.
In the Kenneth Woods Portfolio Management Program (KWPMP), a group of selected students manages a portfolio of $ 1.6 million that was donated in 2000 for training purposes by Ken Woods and other sponsors.

A special feature of the MBA is that it is the only course in the world that includes all three examinations for Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). Thus, the graduates of the Master’s degree also receive a certificate from the CFA Institute , which is highly recognized in the financial world, especially with regard to the failure rate of these demanding exams (50–60%) and represents an additional qualification.
The college also organizes the John Molson Undergraduate Case Competition and the John Molson MBA International Case Competition, which are held annually.
