Melissa Gaboriau Auf der Maur (born March 17, 1972 in Montreal , Québec ) is a Canadian rock musician , model and actress of Swiss descent.

Life

Auf der Maur is the daughter of the politician Nick Auf der Maur and the playwright and translator Linda Gaboriau . One uncle is the Swiss philosopher and theologian Hansjörg Auf der Maur . In her childhood she was raised in English and only later learned the French language. Auf der Maur is a trained photographer and graduate from Concordia University .

In 1994 she joined the band Hole as bass player , where she succeeded the late Kristen Pfaff . However, she only played one album with Hole, Celebrity Skin . In 1999 she switched to the Smashing Pumpkins after the original bassist D'arcy Wretzky left the band. She played with the Smashing Pumpkins on the "Sacred and Profane" tour. At the end of 2000, the Smashing Pumpkins disbanded.

In 2002 she recorded the duet Le Grand Secret with the French band Indochine . In 2003 she finally started the solo project Auf der Maur and released the debut album of the same name on February 2, 2004. As musical support she won in addition to her former band members James Iha ( Smashing Pumpkins and A Perfect Circle ) and Eric Erlandson ( Hole ) also Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri from the Queens of the Stone Age , Mark Lanegan from the Screaming Trees , Twiggy Ramirez , den Marilyn Manson bassist , and many others. She recorded a French version of the song Taste You in addition to an English version. In the same year she starred in the television series The Greatest Canadian . In November she took part in the Love Metal tour.

Since 2010, Melissa Auf der Maur and her husband, the filmmaker Tony Stone, have been running the alternative cultural center Basilica Hudson in the redeveloped factory hall of a former foundry in the city of Hudson, New York , where concerts, art exhibitions and literary readings take place. With her husband Tony Stone Auf der Maur has a daughter named River (* October 2011).
