The Smashing Pumpkins are a Founded in 1988, alternative rock - band from Chicago .

Led by the singer and main composer Billy Corgan (guitar, vocals), they released six albums and two B-side collections during their first creative period from 1987 to 2000 and, since their reunification in 2006, three more albums. The line- up corresponds to that of a typical rock band: two guitars, bass and drums, often supported live by a keyboard player. After 1997 there were numerous changes in the line-up, the only constant member of which is Billy Corgan. The Smashing Pumpkins have sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

style

In 1988 the band was founded by Billy Corgan and James Iha. At first they played without bass in the company of a drum computer , some songs initially with the support of the drummer of Billy's previous band "The Marked", Ron Roesing. After a concert Corgan met D'Arcy Wretzky during an argument, and shortly afterwards she was a permanent member of the band. A little later the drummer Jimmy Chamberlin followed.

The timbre of the Smashing Pumpkins is characterized by a melancholic, melodic mixture of stormy massive guitar rock and psychedelic, light, transcendent sounds as well as Billy Corgan's extraordinary, nasal voice. Basically, the Smashing Pumpkins not only focus on the technical ability of the instrument , but above all the song as a whole. Typical for this are epic songs by the band such as "Silverfuck", "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans", "Window Paine", "Starla", "Glass and the Ghost Children" and "Thru the Eyes of Ruby". Until the tonal reorientation with Adore , the contrast between Corgans ( Fender Stratocaster ) and Ihas ( Gibson Les Paul ) dominated the guitar sound as well as the virtuoso drumming of Jimmy Chamberlin, which merged with the precise driving bass of D'Arcy Wretzky to form an outstanding rhythm section. Nevertheless, Corgan in particular also played various other guitar models (including Fender Mustang and Fender Jaguar ), especially during the studio recordings .

In 1997/1998 the band created a new musical approach with Adore , which included the use of piano and synthesizers as well as drum computers and at the same time dispensed with the stylistic device of borderline distorted guitars. Nevertheless, guitars can also be heard on this album, but with significantly less distortion, but with atmospheric modulation effects ( flanger , phaser ...). Characteristic of Corgan's compositions is the frequent use of chords with optional tones such as in Disarm ( Em7 Cadd9 G5 D / F # ... ) or in the harder pieces (especially Zero, Bodies, XYU ) the use of so-called octaves (fundamental octave ), which, in contrast to the long existing power chords (root fifth-octave), are hardly used so excessively by any other alternative band. On all releases of the band there are also acoustically recorded pieces, some of which also contain strings ( Daydream , Disarm , ...) and represent a great addition to the repertoire. Some bands have taken the Smashing Pumpkins style as a template for developing their own style.

Band history

1987–1991: band formation and early demos

At that time, the band was still largely unknown, but many took in several studio sessions on demo songs, some of which in the first three demo tapes of the band ( Nothing Ever Changes , The Smashing Pumpkins demo tape and Moon demo tape were incorporated). These tapes were sold at concerts. Most of the covers of these demo tapes were designed by James Iha, an art student. The tracks of this time are characterized by flowing, melodious guitar runs influenced by the synthetic sound of the 1980s. In 1994, Billy Corgan put together the legendary Mashed Potatoes collection on five CDs , which includes a comprehensive collection of the demo songs recorded at the time. He gave nine copies of it to the band, family members and friends. The complete set has been circulating on the Internet since December 2002; It is not known which of the nine known owners this copy came from. Songs from this era: There It Goes , I Am One Part II , Rhinoceros , Nothing and Everything , Jennifer Ever , Spiteface  ...

1991-1993: Gish

In 1991 the band's first official album, Gish , was released. The pieces on this record are a lot more guitar-heavy than the first demo songs and have a psychedelic tone. The album was produced by Butch Vig , who is also responsible for milestones such as Nirvanas Nevermind .

Gish was hailed by critics as being extraordinarily successful for this type of music genre, but was supplanted by the almost simultaneous abrupt success of Nevermind. Again and again, the Smashing Pumpkins are mistakenly associated with grunge due to their breakthrough in the early 1990s , although the band sound rather reveals a psychedelic touch and is probably best described as alternative or progressive rock . Corgan also referred to the style of that time as Ultra-Aggressive-Psychedelic-Rock (in Guitar & Bass , February 2000). Like many other bands of the nineties (such as Oasis ), the Smashing Pumpkins dubbed themselves the best band in the world , but did not see this, as usual, as a flirtatious empty phrase, but as a serious claim to their own work. However, one can argue about whether Gish put a line under the band's early New Wave demos (such as “There It Goes” or “Not Worth Asking”).

Several singles and EPs were released during the Gish era (including: I Am One , Siva and Lull , an EP with an extremely imaginative, colorful cover that contains four pieces recorded during this period). The Peel Sessions spawned re-recordings of three songs for the John Peel Radio Show, including Girl Named Sandoz , an Animals cover referring to the pharmaceutical company Sandoz , whose labs developed LSD . Songs from this period: Rhinoceros , Siva , Bury Me , I Am One , Snail , Drown  ... In 1992 the song Drown appeared on the soundtrack Singles - Lonely together .

1993-1995: Siamese Dream

In 1993, the band's big breakthrough came with the album Siamese Dream, again produced by Butch Vig . Some of the songs have 50 guitar tracks per song, making them seem extremely dense and varied. The mix of massive elegiac (sometimes referred to as grunge ) rock with catchy melodies characterize the album. Due to the complex song structure, the songs of this era are difficult to reproduce live. Some critics also complained that the album was overproduced, but this was in turn due to the fact that the Smashing Pumpkins saw themselves under heavy pressure to succeed due to the going down of Gish, and worked twice as hard on Siamese Dream.

During the recording of the album there were massive conflicts within the musical group. Billy Corgan probably also saw himself in competition with Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana and wanted to bring out an album as successful as Nevermind, which, like Siamese Dream, was produced by Butch Vig. He had a nervous breakdown and was considering killing himself. Corgan processed these thoughts especially in the song Today .

The album resulted in a total of four singles: Cherub Rock , Disarm , Today and Rocket .

In 1994 the band decided to interrupt the publication break until the next album release and to bring out a collection of demo songs, rarities and B-sides from 1991-1993 with Pisces Iscariot . In retrospect, however, Pisces Iscariot should establish itself more as an independent album, as the pieces, which are of a very high level for B-sides, appear musically and technically coherent.

Pieces from this time: Today , Cherub Rock , Mayonaise , Soma , Silverfuck , Plume , Hello Kitty Kat  ...

1995-1997: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

In 1995 Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was released , a two-hour double album with 28 tracks. The album is characterized by high diversity and a dense atmosphere; furious angry guitar riffs meet spherical melancholy sound sequences. The two parts of the album are called "Dawn to Dusk" and "Twilight to Starlight" and represent the course of a day. This theme can also be understood from the song sequence. Still, Mellon Collie is not a concept album . Today it is considered one of the most successful double albums of all time.

In 1996 a box set followed with the collected singles from this period: The Airplane Flies High . In addition to the single tracks released by Mellon Collie , there are 28 other B-sides and outtakes that were made during the recording of Mellon Collie but did not make it onto the album. Despite the restriction of these songs to B-side tracks, like Pisces Iscariot two years earlier, they are on a very high musical level.

In 1996, Jimmy Chamberlin and Jonathan Melvoin , the band's tour keyboardist, overdosed on heroin in a hotel room, which was fatal for Melvoin. The band then decided to split up with Jimmy Chamberlin.

Songs from this period: Tonight, Tonight , Bullet with Butterfly Wings , Zero , Here Is No Why , Galapogos , Thru the Eyes of Ruby , 1979 , Bodies , Medellia of the Gray Skies  ...

In 1997 the band contributed the songs The End Is the Beginning Is the End and The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning to the soundtrack of the film Batman & Robin . The former was also released as a single with an accompanying music video. Billy Corgan also wrote the song Eye for the film Lost Highway .

1997-1999: Adore

After a long and unsuccessful search for a replacement for Chamberlin this was finally declared irreplaceable and the Smashing Pumpkins recorded the album Adore in 1997 as a threesome. The sound of this record differs strikingly from its predecessors: the massive guitar sounds were largely avoided and, with a few exceptions, a drum machine was used , which gives the album a very electronic, avant-garde feel. Many critics and listeners were bothered by it and so Adore was rejected from many sides. Objectively speaking, however, this album continues the melodies so typical of the Pumpkins. It is also characterized by a deeply sad, melancholy mood, which is due, among other things, to the fact that Corgan dealt with severe strokes of fate such as the death of his mother (Martha Corgan) and the separation from his long-time wife and, as he said in an interview about the album admitted because Billy Corgan wanted to distance himself from the rock scene. Pieces from this period: Ava Adore , Perfect , Daphne Descends , Tear , For Martha  ...

In 1999 Billy Corgan recorded the score for the film Stigmata together with pianist Mike Garson (who had previously accompanied the band on their tour to Adore) . Among them was the song Identify sung by Natalie Imbruglia , the lyrics of which are also from Corgan.

D'arcy Wretzky is a Depeche Mode fan and was also the one who got Corgan to compose a cover of the Depeche Mode song Never Let Me Down Again . The song appeared on the soundtrack for Not Another Teen Movie! as well as the tribute album For the Masses .

1999–2000: MACHINA and dissolution

In an exceptionally short time after Adore was released , the band began work on a new album. During this time Jimmy Chamberlin rejoined the band and played the drum part for the record MACHINA / The Machines of God . The bass was interpreted by D'Arcy before she left the band. Corgan cited D'Arcy's drug addiction and refusal to seek help as the reason on his February 17, 2004 blog. The Pumpkins won the Canadian bassist Melissa Auf der Maur , who took over D'Arcy's part on the live tour.

MACHINA was released in early 2000 with an elaborate artwork. Musically, the album is carried by catchy melodies, which have been mixed with hard guitar riffs and downtunings of the guitars (Drop C-Tuning: CGCFAD) for a more modern sound. From a commercial point of view, however, MACHINA was less successful with 500,000 copies sold.

For this reason, the record company refused to publish the outtakes and B-sides that the band, which was already in the process of disbanding, wanted to release as the final CD. In protest, the Pumpkins distributed this final final album MACHINA II / The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music as a record collection limited to 25 copies to particularly loyal fans and friends of the band, with the request that it be made available to all other fans on the Internet . MACHINA II contains 25 previously unreleased songs that are characterized by hard rock - as was a matter of course with the Pumpkins from the beginning.

On May 23, 2000, Billy Corgan announced the breakup of the band on a Los Angeles radio station .

Songs from this era: The Everlasting Gaze , Stand Inside Your Love , Try, Try, Try , Saturnine , Dross , Real Love , Untitled  ...

On November 29th, the very last Pumpkins single Untitled hit the airwaves for the first time. On December 1st and 2nd, 2000, the Pumpkins gave their very last concerts. The December 1st concert was broadcast live on the radio from Chicago's United Center . The concert on December 2nd took place where the band's musical career began: the Metro (formerly Cabaret Metro) in Chicago . Lasting four and a half hours, with numerous guest musicians, the concert marked the smashing pumpkins' brilliant farewell to their fans. At the end of the concert, a recording of the band's very first appearance with the original line-up was distributed as a thank you to the band (October 5, 1988, Cabaret Metro).

2000–2005: After the dissolution

On November 19, 2001, Rotten Apples released an 18-song greatest hits collection which, in addition to the band's numerous hits, also contains the two songs Real Love (by MACHINA II ) and Untitled . The limited first edition also contains a B-side collection called Judas 0 , which in addition to 6 B-sides contains another 10 previously unreleased songs.

Also in 2001 came the by the Smashing Pumpkins gecoverte song Never Let Me Down Again of Depeche Mode from 1987 on the soundtrack of the film Not Another Teen Movie . This cover version was also released in 1998 on the Depeche Mode tribute album For the Masses .

In 2002 the Pumpkins video Vieuphoria, originally released on VHS in 1993, was re-released on DVD. Also included on the DVD are the so-called "The Lost '94 Tapes", a live recording of songs from the Gish and Siamese Dream era, as well as an early version by Porcelina . At the same time the CD Earphoria , the audio version of Vieuphoria, was released .

Only a short time after the end of the Smashing Pumpkins, Billy formed a new band with Zwan , whose line-up also included Jimmy Chamberlin. After only one album, however, the band split again and Billy Corgan began to work on his first solo album.

James Iha joined A Perfect Circle as a guitarist in 2003 after a few small projects and guest appearances .

Melissa Auf der Maur released her first solo record in 2004.

Jimmy Chamberlin's first solo album was released in February 2005 under the name Jimmy Chamberlin Complex , on which Billy Corgan had worked alongside guest musicians such as Bill Medley .

In February 2004, Billy accused his former bandmate James Iha on his homepage of being the cause of the Pumpkins split. Among other things, he accused him of not even saying goodbye to his colleagues after the last concert together.

2005–2009: Reunion and Zeitgeist

In a self-placed full-page ad in the Chicago Tribune on June 21, 2005, Corgan expressed his desire to revive the Smashing Pumpkins.

On February 7th, the new album Zeitgeist for July 7th 2007 was announced in the official blog on Myspace.com . On May 21, 2007 Tarantula was released as the first song after the reunion on iTunes as a pre-release.

The first concert took place on May 22nd, 2007 in Paris, but only with two former band members. This was followed by further appearances at festivals such as Rock am Ring , Rock im Park , Nova Rock , PinkPop and a Germany concert on June 6th in Berlin (Columbiahalle). Uli Jon Roth , former guitarist of the Scorpions , appeared as a guest musician on the song Gossamer at the appearances Rock im Park and Rock am Ring .

On December 5, 2007, a blog post by Jimmy Chamberlin on the band's official website announced that the band members had returned to the studio to record material for a possible re-release.

In another blog entry, Billy Corgan announced the release of American Gothic , an acoustic EP with four songs on December 19, 2007 , which was released on January 2, 2008 via iTunes and later on CD outside the USA. The EP includes the songs The Rose March (already known from several concerts on the US tour in 2007), Again, Again, Again (The Crux) , Pox and Sunkissed .

After an extensive tour of Europe and the USA, the Smashing Pumpkins returned to Europe in early 2008. Many long unheard classics were played on this tour.

On April 23, 2008, the Smashing Pumpkins were honored with a star on Hollywood's RockWalk in Los Angeles - Billy Corgan's and Jimmy Chamberlin's handprints are now immortalized there in front of a music store on RockWalk.

On March 20, 2009, Billy Corgan announced that James Joseph "Jimmy" Chamberlin had left the band. According to Corgan, this did not mean the end of the Smashing Pumpkins, but rather a new drummer was sought. On August 17, 2009, the then 19-year-old Mike Byrne was announced as the new drummer of the Smashing Pumpkins.

2009–2013: Teargarden by Kaleidyscope and Oceania

On September 16, 2009, Billy Corgan announced on the band's official website that the new album will be called Teargarden by Kaleidyscope . Instead of a classic album, it should be a song cycle of a total of 44 songs, which should gradually be released on the Internet free of charge from the end of October 2009. The cycle deals with the tarot theme and in particular the fool's card. In addition, according to Corgan, the album recalls the psychedelic roots ( “atmospheric, melodic, heavy, pretty” ) of the Pumpkins. By mid-July 2011, ten of the 44 songs announced had appeared as downloads on the homepage. Furthermore, two physical data carriers were released, each containing four of the songs already published under the names "Teargarden by Kaleidyscope Vol. 1: Songs for a Sailor" and "Teargarden by Kaleidyscope Vol. 2: The Solstice Bare".

On June 19, 2012, the album Oceania was released, an "album within the album" as part of the Teargarden by Kaleidyscope project. Oceania also turned away from the idea of digital publication and appeared accordingly in traditional, physical form. After the release followed an extensive tour through the USA and Europe, which is documented on audio CD and DVD under the title Oceania: Live in NYC . This was later also released as Blu-ray.

2014–2017: Monuments To An Elegy

In March 2014 Corgan announced the work on two albums entitled "Monuments To An Elegy" and "Day For Night", both of which should be released in 2015. On an internet blog Corgan published daily posts on the process of songwriting and the recording of the first album, in which only Corgan himself and Jeff Schroeder as musicians were initially involved. In May 2014 it was finally announced that Tommy Lee , drummer for the band Mötley Crüe will play drums on all songs of "Monuments To An Elegy". Two months later, the official separation of the Pumpkins from their drummer Mike Byrne was announced.

The album "Monuments to an Elegy" was released on December 9, 2014. Although the second album that was announced was originally due to be released in late 2015 after the band did a US tour, there were no recording sessions for the corresponding songs. Instead, Corgan announced in September 2016 that they were working on a solo album with producer Rick Rubin. After the band toured with Brad Wilk ( Rage Against the Machine ), among others , Jimmy Chamberlin returned to the band in 2015. However, he said that his priorities were different and that he was not coming back forever. For some gigs at the beginning of 2016, the former guitarist James Iha was on stage for individual songs with the Pumpkins, without any specific plans for a return to the band. As part of the “Thirty Days” project, Corgan traveled through the USA for several weeks in the spring of 2017 to collect impressions for new music. In connection with this trip and in view of his 50th birthday in March 2017, he announced a box with 50 of his best songs in acoustic versions. Instead of the box, Corgan's second solo album Ogilala was released in October 2017 with exclusively new, acoustic songs. In June 2017 Chamberlin mentioned that a reunion tour in 2018 was possible.

From 2018: Return of Iha and Chamberlin - Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1

In January 2018, Billy Corgan shared a photo on Instagram that showed him with James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin in the recording studio. On February 15, 2018, the band officially announced that founding members Iha and Chamberlin had returned and would go on the Shiny and Oh So Bright Tour from June 2018 . Original bassist D'arcy Wretzky also stated that she had been offered a contract to rejoin the band, but that Billy Corgan had withdrawn this offer after a short time. Corgan denied this statement and stated: "Miss Wretzky has been repeatedly invited to play with the band, take part in demo sessions or at least meet in person, but has missed all opportunities". In an interview with The Pulse of Radio , he went so far as to say that Wretzky will probably never return to the Smashing Pumpkins, especially since they had not been on stage in 19 years.

In March 2018, Corgan first hinted that the band was planning to release two four-song EPs for 2018. On June 8, 2018, the first single "Solara" was released. In September 2018, instead of the EPs, the new album Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No future. No Sun. announced, which was released on November 16, 2018 on Napalm Records as CD , record and download . The band had been working on new material since early February with Rick Rubin , who was producing for the first time since Adore . The recordings took place at Sangri La Studio in Malibu . The second single "Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts)" was released on September 13, 2018 along with a music video directed by Corgan himself. Furthermore, on November 7th, the opening track “Knights of Malta” was made public on the Internet as a YouTube video. All eight songs on the album were written by Billy Corgan. Between July and December 2018, the Smashing Pumpkins toured with this line-up with their long-time guitarist Jeff Schroeder, performing in Bologna and London in addition to numerous concerts in Canada and above all in the USA for one event each . The album received partly mixed, but overall rather positive reviews.
