Rock im Park is a music festival that takes place annually in May or June in the Volkspark Dutzendteich in Nuremberg and a parallel event to Rock am Ring with an almost identical band line-up.

Since 1993, a rock festival has been held in the south as a parallel event to Rock am Ring in the west. The first location was in 1993 under the name Rock in Vienna in Vienna. In 1994 the festival took place as Rock in Riem at the old airport in Munich Riem. The companies ARGO Concerts GmbH and Marek Lieberberg Konzertagentur GmbH & Co.KG have acted as organizers since the first edition in Munich. In 1995 it moved as Rock im Park to the Munich Olympic Stadium and the Olympic Park, where it also took place in 1996.

Rock im Park has been taking place in Nuremberg since 1997. Until the renovation for the 2006 World Cup , the center stage was in the Frankenstadion . 2004 we moved to the neighboring Zeppelin Field , a part of the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds of the NSDAP . Because of the immediate preparations for the World Cup, in 2006 they had to evade again and relocated the main stage to Luitpoldhain .

With the 2006 festival, Rock im Park supposedly said goodbye to the Nuremberg location due to logistical complications with a football match as a parallel event. On October 19, 2006 it was announced that the festival would no longer take place in Nuremberg. Looking for a new venue in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg . On November 29, 2006, however, it was announced that the festival will continue to take place in Nuremberg, initially only with a contract for 2007. After the overwhelming success this year, it was decided to continue to use Nuremberg as an event location.

Since 2007, the center stage has been back on the zeppelin field.

In 2005 the festival had 45,000 visitors, in 2006 49,000. In 2007 the festival was sold out in advance for the first time and 60,000 visitors were counted. At the same time, the qualifying game for the 2008 European Championship between Germany and San Marino took place on the Saturday of the festival in the Franken-Stadion . In 2008 Rock im Park was completely sold out in advance and 70,000 rock fans visited the festival.

At Rock im Park 2010 there were approximately 60,500 spectators. But even though the festival had roughly the same attendance as in 2007, it was not sold out in 2010. One of the reasons for this is that the auditorium for the Alternastage has been enlarged a little and more tickets than in previous years could have gone on sale. To mark the anniversary, the festival took place over four days in 2010.

In 2012 Rock im Park was sold out for the first time since 2008. All three-day tickets were completely sold out three months before the festival.

In 2017 the festival was sold out again and a new visitor record was set with 88,500 visitors.

On April 16, 2020, the organizer announced that the two festivals Rock im Park and Rock am Ring 2020 will be canceled until August 31, due to the ban on all major events as part of the measures to contain the corona pandemic . Tickets already purchased could be exchanged free of charge for the respective festival of the following year. Alternatively, a full refund of the purchase price has been offered since July 15, 2020. There should be no changes to the planned headliners.
