Jamiroquai is an internationally successful British acid jazz - band . The name is made up of the words "Jam" for the genre of music and "Iroquois" for the Iroquois tribe , with whose philosophy the band leader Jay Kay identifies.
history
Jamiroquai was formed in the late 1980s as part of the acid jazz movement in London after Jay Kay's application to sing for Brand New Heavies had failed.
Jamiroquai's first single When You Gonna Learn? was released in autumn 1992 on the independent label "Acid Jazz". Her first album Emergency on Planet Earth was released in the spring of 1993 on a Sony sub-label , which Jamiroquai committed to eight albums. In the fall of 1994, the band released the second record, The Return of the Space Cowboy, with the top ten hit Stillness In Time .
The third album, Traveling Without Moving , produced the great chart successes Virtual Insanity and Cosmic Girl in the fall of 1996 , with which Jamiroquai established itself on the US market. The video for Virtual Insanity won awards for Best Video, Best Special Effects, Best Screenplay, and Breakthrough Video at the MTV Video Music Awards .
The hit single Deeper Underground from the fourth album Synkronized was part of the soundtrack for the remake of Godzilla in the summer of 1998 . With Canned Heat , Jamiroquai had another hit on this album in mid-1999, which, unlike the earlier records, can no longer be assigned so clearly to acid jazz.
The fifth album A Funk Odyssey , which was released in the late summer of 2001, is strongly influenced by disco. The title of the album is based on the Stanley Kubrick film 2001: A Space Odyssey . The first single from this album, Little L , was a chart success in many countries.
In mid-2005 Jamiroquai's sixth album Dynamite was released with the singles Feels Just Like It should , Seven Days in Sunny June and (Don't) Give Hate a Chance .
In the fall of 2006, the band switched to the Sony subsidiary Columbia Records . A greatest hits album was released for the Christmas season. On April 25, 2007, they officially separated from their record company.
In 2010, the band's seventh album, entitled Rock Dust Light Star, was released on Mercury Records. The song White Knuckle Ride was released as a pre-release single . Her eighth album Automaton was released in March 2017, with a song of the same name that was previously released.
Former keyboardist and songwriter Toby Smith passed away on April 11, 2017 at the age of 46.
