MTV Video Music Awards / Breakthrough Video

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Breakthrough Award , which was given as part of the MTV Video Music Awards , replaced the predecessor Most Experimental Video , which was awarded from 1984 to 1987, in 1988 . The name of the award refers to the “most groundbreaking video” of the year.

The award was one of the longest-lasting categories of VMAs and was given from 1988 to 2005. It was unexpectedly discontinued in 2006, but then reactivated for 2009 and 2010.

REM and Fatboy Slim each won the award twice, while Art of Noise won both the predecessor and the successor award once each.
