Squeeze was an English rock band that was reckoned to the New Wave in the late 1970s . The group was founded in London in 1974 and is best known for their hits Cool for Cats and Up the Junction .

history

The band's founding members in 1974 were Chris Difford, Glenn Tilbrook, Jools Holland and Paul Gunn. The band name came from a 1973 album by the group The Velvet Underground . In 1976 they received their first record deal. In the meantime Gilson Lavis had replaced Paul Gunn on drums and Harry Kakoulli had joined as bassist.

Her debut album was produced by John Cale and was released in 1978 by A&M Records . In Australia, the United States and Canada, the album was released under the band name UK Squeeze to avoid legal disputes with an American band called Tight Squeeze . The addition UK was then omitted for all subsequent recordings.

1979 Kakoulli was replaced by John Bentley on bass. Holland left the group in August 1980. He later became a well-known television presenter and had his own band called Millionaires between 1982 and 1987 . For Holland came Paul Carrack , who had previously played keyboard for Ace and was the author and singer of their biggest hit How Long . He was also involved in several recordings for Roxy Music .

In 1981 the album East Side Story was released , produced by Elvis Costello and Roger Bechirian . Carrack sang the lead vocals on the hit single Tempted . He then left the band and later became very successful as a soloist and with Mike & the Mechanics . He was replaced by Don Snow.

At the end of 1982 there was tension in the band and it was decided to split up. Difford and Tilbrook released a joint album in 1984 as Difford & Tilbrook (with Keith Wilkinson of Nasty Pop on bass). In 1985 Difford, Tilbrook, Holland, Lavis and Bentley came back together as a squeeze for a fundraising event. This concert was so successful that it was unanimously decided to release records again and go on tour. Squeeze still had a large following, especially in the US. So in the fall of 1989 they easily sold off New York's Madison Square Garden. Wilkinson came as the new bass player, Jools' brother Chris Holland played as the second keyboardist, but was quickly replaced by Andy Metcalfe. In 1990 Holland left the group and Matt Irving took his place.

In early 1992, Cool For Cats hit the UK charts again.

In the period that followed, there were still a number of personnel changes until the band gave their farewell concert on November 27, 1999 in Aberdeen , Scotland . Since then, Difford and Tilbrook have been playing more or less successfully as soloists, always supporting each other during recordings and concerts.

In 2006 Chris Difford released a live album and DVD called South East Side Story .

The group released their album Cradle to the Grave in 2015 and The Knowledge in 2017 .
