Elvis Costello
Elvis Costello OBE (born August 25, 1954 in London ; actually Declan Patrick MacManus ) is a British musician .
Musical career
Beginnings
Elvis Costello, whose real name is Declan McManus, is the son of Ross McManus (1927-2011), an English singer and trumpeter who was successful in the 1950s and 1960s . Costello grew up in London and moved to Birkenhead for a short time with his mother in 1971 at the age of 17 after his parents separated . Here he and a friend formed a folk duo called Rusty .
Back in London in 1973, he played in folk clubs under the name DP Costello - the name Costello comes from his paternal great-grandmother and had already been used as a pseudonym by his father. In 1974 he founded the pub rock band Flip City , made demo recordings and went looking for a label.
In 1977 he was signed by Jake Riviera for the Stiff Records label . On the advice of his manager, he changed his stage name to Elvis Costello (after Elvis Presley ). Costello's appearance initially reminded one of Buddy Holly through the large glasses . His first album, My Aim Is True , was released in the year the contract was signed . The backing band was the band Clover , which originally came from San Francisco and also appeared with Huey Lewis as a singer before this was successful with Huey Lewis and the News . This first album was already successful in the British charts. It was then released via Columbia in the USA, where it reached the Top 40 on the Billboard charts and became a million seller after a memorable television appearance on Saturday Night Live . With Watching the Detectives he also had a single hit in the UK charts. The following year he was nominated for a Grammy for best newcomer.
He next followed Riviera to Radar Records . The following albums, This Year's Model and Armed Forces , also produced by Nick Lowe , were even more successful and were able to advance to the top of the charts, especially in England. For this he put together a permanent backing band under the name The Attractions , which played with him for most of his career. The album productions became more complex, stylistically he changed from the pub rock of the first album to pop rock sounds. This Year's Model was voted 98th of the 500 best albums of all time in a survey by Rolling Stone magazine in 2003 , and its predecessor and successor also made it onto the best list, as did the later album Imperial Bedroom . Three songs from the first three albums are in the corresponding song list in the magazine. One of his best known and most successful songs comes from Armed Forces , Oliver's Army . At number two in the UK charts, it is his top-ranked song. The album also reached number two and was his best-ranked album in the US at number 10. His success there was not diminished even by a minor scandal. During a verbal battle in a Florida pub , he disparaged himself about African American musicians. Costello had to cancel his US tour, despite apologizing and performing on Rock Against Racism . As a result, sales for the album Armed Forces fell , but it was still another million seller.
1980s
Back in England, Costello became the producer of the Specials , one of the most successful English Ska bands alongside Madness . In 1980 his fourth album Get Happy! Was released, which was influenced by old Motown and Stax recordings . For the second time he followed Riviera to its new label F. Beat . Costello was not as successful with the album, but it contained a number 4 hit with I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down .
The next album, called Trust , was released a year later and contained a mix of styles from various musical styles to jazz sounds. The second album in 1981 was Almost Blue , a country cover album produced by successful country producer Billy Sherrill . Costello's fans went along with his style change. The single A Good Year for the Roses was the third of his three top ten hits in the British single charts. Imperial Bedroom appeared in 1982 . Geoff Emerick , who had become known for editing several Beatles albums , ensured the technical quality . Costello also performed the songs on the album live in London with his companion band The Attractions and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra . Although it wasn't quite as commercially successful, the pop album came 166th on the Rolling Stone list.
In 1983 Costello recorded the pop-oriented album Punch the Clock with producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley , on which, in addition to Caron Wheeler and Claudia Fontaine alias Afrodiziak, the jazz trumpeter Chet Baker participated as background singers in a brass section (TKO horns) .
In 1984 Costello was also a producer for the folk-punk band The Pogues , with whom he also appeared at concerts and whose bassist Cait O'Riordan he subsequently married. In the same year the album Goodbye Cruel World , which was again produced with Langer and Winstanley, was released , and when it was re-released on CD in 1995 he wrote: “Congratulations! You've just purchased our worst album ”(“ Congratulations! You just bought our worst album ”).
Costello had released nine studio albums in eight years. 1985 was the first year in which there was no new album, instead a single with T Bone Burnett and two best-of albums in Great Britain and the USA were released. The US album became his third million seller. The following year he returned with King of America , where he worked for the first time again (almost) without the "Attractions" and instead worked with studio musicians in Los Angeles. As an artist name he chose The Costello Show . Stylistically, he turned back more to the rock and country of earlier works; but it was the first album after the debut album that missed the top ten. Blood and Chocolate , which was released in the same year , continued the recourse to its musical beginnings. With Nick Lowe he hired the producer of his second album again and the Attractions were there again.
After 1986 a break followed, Costello took a break and switched to Warner . He also parted ways with Attractions in the following productions. Only after three years did a new album appear in 1989, the rock-pop hit Spike . The album is one of his more successful, gaining gold status in the UK and USA . The single Veronica , on which the song's co-writer Paul McCartney can be heard, became his most successful in the United States.
1990s
On the album Mighty Like a Rose (1991) - as well as on McCartney's albums from this time - you can hear some common songs by Costello and McCartney. With this album he entered the charts for the first time in Switzerland.
From 1992 he worked with the strings of the Brodsky Quartet . The result was the album The Juliet Letters . In the 1990s, Costello became increasingly interested in classical music . In 1993 he wrote the songs for the singer Wendy James' debut album . In 1994 he published his first film music, which he composed with Richard Harvey for the BBC series GBH . In the same year he appeared with Tony Bennett on MTV Unplugged .
After various musical excursions, he returned to the rough recordings of the early years in 1994. He reunited with Attractions for two albums. Brutal Youth became a rock album, even though Mitchell Froom was reluctant to produce it. He also went on a world tour with the band. All This Useless Beauty , published two years later, contained new recordings of songs that Costello had originally written for other artists such as Johnny Cash , Dusty Springfield , Aimee Mann and Roger McGuinn . This ended the time with the attractions.
In between, a solo album with the title Kojak Variety with lesser known, older cover songs was released in 1995 , which received relatively little attention. The orientation towards the 1960s also led to the collaboration with Burt Bacharach . At first they just recorded the song God Give Me Strength together and then decided to work on a collaboration album, which was released in 1998. Painted from Memory was widely recognized and for the song I Still Have That Other Girl both were awarded a Grammy for best pop performance as a duet.
Costello's rendition of the Bacharach classic I'll Never Fall In Love Again is part of the Austin Powers 2 soundtrack , in which he had a brief appearance with Bacharach as a street musician. Another cinematic engagement at the time was an appearance in Spiceworld - The Movie of the Spice Girls . He also composed a contribution to the soundtrack of The Big Lebowski . With the title She can be heard on the soundtrack for Notting Hill as an interpreter.
From 2000
Another foray into classical music followed in 2001. In collaboration with the Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter , whom he admired , he released the album For the Stars, one of the more successful forays into pop music by a classical music giant. The album earned him his first chart placement in Germany.
This also affected his next album. With When I Was Cruel , Costello released his own rock album for a long time in 2002. This was the first time he hit the charts in all German-speaking countries, and in the USA it was only his third album to make it into the top 20. In addition, his tour musicians formed the new backing band The Imposters , including Steve Nieve from Attractions. In 2003 Elvis Costello was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .
In the meantime, Costello had entered into a relationship with the Canadian jazz musician Diana Krall , whom he married in late 2003. This also had a great influence on his next album North , which corresponds to a song cycle with classical and jazz influences. He also worked on a coherent work on his next album, this time again in the direction of rock. However, he rejected his original concept, and The Delivery Man also became more of a song cycle. On the album, released in 2004, he was officially accompanied by the Imposters. In the same year, Costello appeared at the Academy Awards with T-Bone Burnett to present a co-composed and Oscar nominated song for the film On the Road to Cold Mountain . In 2004 he also recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra Il Sogno , composed for a ballet performance of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night 's Dream .
When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005 , Costello was one of the musicians who performed at benefit concerts for the victims of the disaster. There he met the city-born blues musician Allen Toussaint . This resulted in a collaboration that resulted in the album The River in Reverse . Other contributors are The Imposters , The Crescent City Horns and Anthony Brown . The album, which includes classics by Toussaint and new songs by the two, was nominated for a Grammy for best pop album. In March 2006, a new album was also released with a concert recording from July 2004, when Costello performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague with the Metropole Orkest under the direction of Vince Mendoza . The live recording offers a cross-section of his musical work from rock 'n' roll of the eighties (Clubland) to chamber music (Put Away Forbidden Playthings) of the nineties. Both albums were only successful in the USA, but did not make it into the top 100. In June 2006 Costello appeared at the Decades of Rock 2006 and played songs by both musicians with Billie Joe Armstrong , for example Alison from Elvis Costello and Basket Case from Green Day .
His next release was a rock album with the Imposters. Momofuku (the title is reminiscent of the inventor of instant noodles Momofuku Andō ). He did not get into the charts in Great Britain again, which meant the longest time without chart success in his home country.
In 2009 he worked with T-Bone Burnett and he tried his hand at country folk again. The album Secret, Profane and Sugarcane was well received in the US, where it returned to the top 20. Only a year later, National Ransom appeared , also with Burnett, with whom he followed up on the predecessor musically and in terms of success.
On May 15, 2010, Costello canceled two concerts in Israel in protest against the Israeli settlement policy and the repression of the Palestinian population. In a statement on his website, he wrote: “I have to believe that the audience for the concerts would have consisted of many people who question their government's settlement policies and condemn conditions that intimidate, humiliate and worse, subject Palestinian civilians in the name of national security. I apologize deeply to the disappointed concert-goers and the organizers. "
After that, Costello took another break from production, releasing a luxury live album with the Imposters (price $ 262) and a compilation of his score, before returning with a new production in 2013. Again he tried a new approach by giving his older songs a new look together with the hip-hop group The Roots . With the album he achieved good chart positions, also in German-speaking countries.
In July 2018, Costello had to interrupt his tour because he suffered from a “small but very malignant cancer”.
Private
Costello is married for the third time. The first marriage was in 1974 with Mary Burgoyne, with whom he had a son in 1975. In 1986 he married the former Pogues musician Cait O'Riordan ; the couple divorced in 2002.
In 2003 Costello married the Canadian jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall , and in December 2006 the couple had twins. The album North is about the new relationship.
Instruments
Preferred for its acoustic guitar Elvis Costello Western guitars of American traditional manufacturer Gibson . In his honor, brought Gibson Elvis Costello Limited - signature guitar out. For electric guitars, he prefers models from Fender .
Others
- In the sitcom Frasier , in episode 20 of the tenth season, Costello plays an unemployed folk musician who temporarily drives the Crane brothers out of their refuge in Café Nervosa. When he got the long-awaited job at a bank, he made it possible for the two psychologists to return to their regular café.
- For episode two of the second season of Dr. House provided Costello with a cover version of Beautiful (Original: Christina Aguilera ). The song is played at the end when House is rehearsing a motorcycle; At the beginning of the episode, the original was heard on the patient of the week. The piece was first released in full length on the original soundtrack for the series in late 2007.
- Elvis Costello starred in the first episode of the second season of Two and a Half Men , along with Sean Penn , Bobby Cooper and Harry Dean Stanton . They are all members of a support group there who have come together in Charlie Harper's ( Charlie Sheen ) house to talk about their problems.
- Costello appeared in the final (22nd) episode of the third season of the sitcom 30 Rock . Together with other well-known musicians ( Mary J. Blige , Sheryl Crow , Cyndi Lauper , Rachael Yamagata , Wyclef Jean , Michael McDonald , Steve Earle , Clay Aiken , Adam Levine and Talib Kweli ) he plays himself and gives a benefit concert for the father of one the protagonist ( Alec Baldwin ). He insinuated that Costello was in truth an internationally sought-after art thief who only used the name "Elvis Costello" to hide from the police.
- In the Simpsons episode It's only Rock 'n' Roll (Originally How I Spent My Strummer Vacation ) Elvis Costello can be seen as a cartoon character together with other well-known rock musicians and also speaks the role himself.
- The Rolling Stone listed Costello ranked 80 of 100 of the greatest musicians and ranked 24 of the 100 best songwriters of all time .
