Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album
The Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album (in German about "Grammy Award for the Best Singing Album - Traditional Pop") is a music prize that has been awarded at the annual Grammy Awards since 1992 . The awards are given to albums from the music field of traditional pop music.
Background and story
The Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards), which have been presented since 1958, are presented annually in numerous categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) in the United States of America for artistic achievement, technical competence and excellent overall performance regardless of the album - Honor sales or chart position. The award is given for high-quality albums from the music field of traditional pop music.
The award was introduced in 1992 as the Best Traditional Pop Performance and awarded as the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance from 1993 to 2000 . Since 2001 it has been known as Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance . With the exception of the first year in which songs were also nominated, the award was given to performers for musical albums in which at least 51% of the recording time was spent on vocal pieces. Pieces are considered "traditional" if their composition, singing style and instrumental arrangement correspond to the basics of the Great American Songbook . Until 2001, the award was only given to the performers, from 2001 also to the technicians and producers of the pieces.
First prize in this category was awarded to Natalie Cole in 1992 for the composite duet Unforgettable with her late father Nat King Cole . This was the only time the award was given to a song rather than an album. Most of the awards in this category went to Tony Bennett , who received the award 11 times. Natalie Cole and Michael Bublé are the only other artists to have received the award more than once. The most common prizes went to Americans , but the prize was also given five times to performers from Canada and once to a British artist.
