The Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album , in German "Grammy award for the best large jazz ensemble album", is a music prize that has been awarded by the Recording Academy in Los Angeles since 1961 . The award goes to jazz ensembles for new outstanding albums.
History and background
Since 1959, the Grammy Awards are presented annually in numerous categories by the Recording Academy in the United States to recognize artistic achievement, technical competence, and overall excellence regardless of album sales or chart position. One of these categories is the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album , which has been presented in 1961 .
As with numerous other price categories, the name of the price designation has been changed several times:
- 1961 was the name of the award Best Jazz Performance Large Group
- From 1962 to 1963 the award was called Best Jazz Performance - Large Group (Instrumental)
- In 1964 the name was changed to Best Instrumental Jazz Performance - Large Group
- From 1965 to 1971 the award was given under the name Best Instrumental Jazz Performance - Large Group or Soloist with Large Group .
- From 1972 to 1978 the award was named Best Jazz Performance by a Big Band
- From 1979 to 1991, the price category was Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Big Band called
- From 1992 to 2000 the prize was Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance and
- The current award designation Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album has been used since 2001 .
From 1962 to 1971 and 1979 to 1991 the prize was awarded for instrumental works only, which is evident from the current price designation.
The Grammy Awards are presented annually for works published in the previous year.
