The Grammy Award for Best Rap Song was introduced in 2004 to honor songwriters. According to the category description, the award is given to songwriters for both the lyrics and the music for songs that were newly recorded or became known during the award period. Songs with known samples can also be awarded.

The first excellent songwriters were Eminem, along with Jeff Bass and Luis Resto, for the song Lose Yourself from the soundtrack album for the film 8 Mile . Kanye West has received this award six times and has been nominated ten times. This makes him the most frequently awarded songwriter. Shawn Carter , known by his stage name Jay-Z, has received three awards and five nominations. In addition, no songwriter has received awards more than once. TI (aka Clifford Harris) was nominated four times, but never won the award, making it the songwriter with the most non-award nominations in this category.
