Stephen Garrett (* 11. November 1974 in Louisville , Kentucky ; † 25. February 2008 ) was an American hip-hop - and Contemporary R & B -producer, rapper and singer , who under the pseudonym Static or Static Major known has been. He was a member of the R&B trio Playa and worked as a producer and songwriter for Aaliyah , Ginuwine , Destiny's Child , Brandy, among othersand JoJo .

biography

Stephen Ellis Garrett grew up in Louisville, Kentucky as the son of a family of musicians. He started singing in the church choir very early . There his sister played the piano, his mother was the musical director and his father preached as a pastor .

Garrett's first independent musical station was the Trio Playa, which he founded with Black and Smokey. The three musicians sang gospel in local churches and were later discovered by DeVante Swing , who took them to Swing Mob's rooster. Swing had already discovered artists like Missy Elliott and Ginuwine. Shortly afterwards, however, the group broke up. Garrett began there for the first time with the songwriting for various other artists of the label. He wrote the debut single Pony for Ginuwine, which was produced by Timbaland .

Together with Playa he released the album Cheers 2 U in 1998 on Def Soul , a sub-label of Def Jam . The theme song entered the top 40 of the US Billboard singles charts. The album itself reached the Top 100. A new album by the band has been announced since 1999, but has not yet been released. After Garrett also wrote much of the album material for Playa, he began working for Aaliyah as well. Some of the songs he wrote for her include a. the hits Are You That Somebody and Try Again . After Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash in 2001, Garrett began working for other artists. Truth Hurts ' Addictive and Brandy's Come as You Are were the next hits of his writing career. Garrett also started producing, initially collaborating with the greats of the hip-hop genre such as Timbaland, Dr. Dre and Scott Storch . He has also produced artists such as Jamie Foxx and Pretty Ricky . He showed his singing and rap talent as a guest musician with David Banner and the rap duo Timbaland & Magoo . In the spring of 2008 Garrett signed a contract for several solo albums with Blackground Records . The first solo album Suppertime was announced for 2008. The first cooperation and at the same time last releases by Garrett were the singles Lollipop for which he a Grammy Award for Best Rap Song received, and I Got My by Lil Wayne .

In February 2008, Garrett died at the Baptist Hospital East in Louisville at the age of 33 from complications from surgery. He left a wife and four children.
