Playa (band)

Playa was an American Contemporary R & B - Trio consisting of Steve "Static" Garrett , Smokey and Black. In 1997, she had a little success with the song Cheers 2 U .

Band history

All members of the trio are from Kentucky . They initially sang gospel in various churches and performed at local talent shows. There they based their style on the Jodeci group . They were then signed to the Swing Mob record company, which worked with Elektra Records . However, there was never a release, so they separated from the label again.

Def Jam signed the trio as the third artist after Montell Jordan and Neko Case for their contemporary R&B label "Def Soul". In 1997, the first single, Don't Stop the Music , was released, reaching number 73 on the US Billboard charts and number 26 on the R&B charts, which was a notable success. In 1998, Playa released the album Cheers 2 U , which was produced by Timbaland and Smokey. The single of the same name climbed to number 38 on the Billboard charts and reached the top 10 in the R&B charts. The album itself reached number 86 on the charts.

A second Playa album has been announced since 1999, but it never came. However, a few more singles were released, and some soundtracks , u. a. for Dr. Dolittle and The Diamond Cop , various songs published. Stephen Garrett started a career as a music producer.
