Destiny's Child ( "Destiny's Child") was an American Contemporary R & B - girl group , consisting of the last three singers Beyonce Knowles , Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams . After the release of their greatest hits album in autumn 2005, the group split.

Band history

The beginnings

Destiny's Childs roots go back to 1990 when Beyoncé Knowles and LaTavia Roberson started the dance and singing group Girl's Tyme , led by Beyoncé's father Matthew, at the age of nine . A year later, Beyoncé's school friend Kelly Rowland joined them, followed by LeToya Luckett in 1993 . The group initially made small appearances and took part in local talent competitions, as well as on TV , including the successful Star Search format . In 1995 they signed their first record deal with Elektra Records as Destiny's Child . Unsatisfied with the collaboration, the group soon switched to Columbia Records .

Destiny's Child

In 1997, the group released their first song, Killing Time, on the soundtrack to the hit Men in Black . A little later, their debut album Destiny's Child came out, which aroused different opinions. Nevertheless, the group was able to book their first chart hit with the release No, No, No , produced by rapper Wyclef Jean . Although the second single With Me could not build on the success of the debut single, the album later reached platinum status .

The Writing's on the Wall

Just a year later, Destiny's Child returned to the studio to record their second album, The Writing's on the Wall . The record, produced by Missy Elliott , Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins , Chad Elliot, Daryl Simmons and Beyoncé, far exceeded the success of its debut and sold in the following two years, not least thanks to the hit singles Bills Bills Bills , Jumpin 'Jumpin' and most importantly Say My Name more than 13 million times worldwide.

Despite the continued success, the original quartet finally broke up in early 2000. LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett accused manager Matthew Knowles of making money from the band, while his real interest was in the career of his daughter Beyoncé anyway. Although neither Roberson nor Luckett had intended to leave the band, two new members - Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin  - were immediately  introduced with the video for the single Say My Name . Roberson and Luckett then took legal action against the group and the manager, but later dropped the case against Knowles and Rowland.

In July 2000, Farrah Franklin finally left the band after health problems and increasing absence. Destiny's Child remained as a trio and released the single Independent Women (Part I) in late autumn 2000 , the title song for the blockbuster 3 Angels for Charlie . The song spent 11 weeks at the top of the US Billboard charts and also helped the group achieve their ultimate breakthrough internationally. Shortly thereafter, the band won two Grammys for "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal" and "Best R&B Song" for Say My Name .

Survivor

The band's third album, Survivor , then released , reached number 1 in the album charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as in Great Britain, Australia and the United States and sold 663,000 copies in the first week in the United States alone. With the single of the same name and the later released Bootylicious , the record produced two more internationally successful chart toppers; also emotion , a cover version of the hit of the same name Bee Gees , and Nasty Girl , the lead single from the album published in parallel Remix This Is the Remix , could build on the success of previous extractions.

In time for the season, the group finally released their first Christmas album, 8 Days of Christmas, in late 2001 . After the release of the single of the same name and the subsequent world tour in 2002, the trio separated for the time being in favor of individual solo careers.

Destiny Fulfilled

In November 2004, the reunited trio released their fourth album Destiny Fulfilled . The album, produced by Rodney Jerkins , Mario Winans and 9th Wonder , brought the band four more international top 10 hits with Lose My Breath , Soldier (feat. TI and Lil Wayne ), the mid-tempo ballads Girl and Cater 2 U. The album sold more than 8 million times worldwide, but could not follow the overwhelming success of the two previous albums The Writing's on the Wall and Survivor .

On June 11, 2005, Destiny's Child announced their final breakup on their world tour Destiny Fulfilled… And Lovin 'It in Barcelona . While the band was honored with several prizes (including three World Music Awards ) in the following months, the greatest hits album # 1’s was released in addition to a DVD for the world tour . With Stand Up for Love , the anthem for Children's Day 2005, the record produced the band's last single together, whose members finally went their separate ways in March 2006.

In December 2007, Kelly Rowland announced that she and her bandmates Beyoncé Knowles and Michelle Williams would consider reuniting in 2008. In 2008 Williams ruled this out.

For the band's 15th anniversary, the group released their second compilation album Playlist: The Very Best of Destiny's Child in October 2012 . Finally, on January 10, 2013, a third compilation called Love Songs was announced. A single from the album, which was released on January 29, 2013, is entitled Nuclear . At Super Bowl XLVII on February 3, 2013, Destiny's Child performed live together for the first time since their separation in 2005 in the halftime show. The band performed another joint appearance in 2018 during Beyoncé's performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival .
