Independent Women is a song by the US girl group Destiny’s Child . It was written and produced by Beyoncé for her third studio album, Survivor . The song first appeared on the soundtrack for Charlie's Angels in 2000 . In Independent Women first sang Michelle Williams as a member of Destiny's Child.

Originally the song was called Independent Women Part Two , Independent Woman Part One was originally a Pasadena remix, so the song was renamed Independent Women .

Both versions were released on the soundtrack for the film and on the album. The song reached # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for 11 weeks from November 2000 to February 2001. In the UK, both versions of the song were released on the same day.

The music video was directed by Francis Lawrence , at the end of the video the girls parody scenes from the film.

The song is ranked 85 on the list of the 100 Greatest British Songs of All Time, which was released in May 2002.

Independent Woman was a huge success in the USA. The single reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 , which they held for a full 11 weeks. It was the girl group's third number one hit in the United States. The song had a big airplay as it was played very often on American radios, which meant that the song stayed at number 1 on the airplay charts for 10 weeks.

Independent Woman debuted at number 1 in the UK and became her second number 1 hit in the UK. The British phonographic industry has awarded the single gold for over 400,000 sales. It also took first place in Canada, Ireland and New Zealand.
