Francis Lawrence (born March 26, 1971 in Vienna ) is an American director of music videos and feature films.

Life

Lawrence was born in the Austrian capital Vienna ; his family moved to Los Angeles when he was three years old. Lawrence worked as a second camera assistant on the set of Hart auf Air (Pump Up the Volume) before graduating from Loyola Marymount University with a degree in Directing Cinema and Television Film . In 1993 he worked as an analog-digital converter for the film Marching Out of Time by Anton Vassil and then, together with his former classmate Mike Rosen, directing music videos. Lawrence's first self-directed music video with the band Tidal Force for Michael Blakey, president of the record company Atico Records , enjoyed great success and established his reputation as imaginative screenwriter and director.

Lawrence joined a new film production company where his career as a successful director began. He directed the music videos of famous artists such as Britney Spears , The Black Eyed Peas , Avril Lavigne , Aerosmith , Jennifer Lopez , Lady Gaga , Pink and Shakira . He is also responsible as a director for numerous commercials , for example for Coca-Cola , L'Oréal , Calvin Klein , Pepsi , Maybelline , Bacardi and McDonald’s .

In 2005 he directed the shooting of his first feature film Constantine with Keanu Reeves in the lead role. In 2007 he directed the film I Am Legend starring Will Smith , based on the Richard Matheson novel of the same name .

2011 Lawrence was for the music video Bad Romance by Lady Gaga with the Grammy Award for best music video award. This was followed in the same year by his film Water for the Elephants , which grossed almost 17 million US dollars on the opening weekend. In 2013 he directed the science fiction film The Hunger Games - Catching Fire , the sequel to The Hunger Games - The Hunger Games from 2011. Also in its sequels, The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games - Mockingjay Part 2 (2015), directed by Lawrence.
