Shakira is their only child together; "Shakira" is Arabic (شاكِرة, DMG šākira ) and means "the grateful". Shakira maintains family contact with her half-siblings from her father's first marriage. At the age of 17, she moved with her family to Bogota , later left Colombia and moved to the United States to Florida , to the vicinity of Gloria Estefan and her husband, who produced two albums for Shakira. Because she could no longer find peace in Miami due to her fame, the singer settled in the Bahamas .

Career

1990-1993: beginnings

Shakira was discovered at the age of 13 when she handed a Sony manager a cassette with her own songs, but also with cover songs Material Girl and La Isla Bonita by Madonna in a hotel in her hometown , and received a recording contract. At the age of 14 she released her first album, Magia (magic, sorcery) , on Sony BMG . Back then, it flopped with fewer than 1,000 copies sold, but is now a popular collector's item among fans. The second album, Peligro (Danger) , which Shakira released in 1993, was also denied major commercial success. Shakira therefore decided to quit music for the time being and graduate from school.

1994–2000: Success in the Spanish-speaking market

In 1994 Shakira played the role of Luisa Maria in the Colombian telenovela El Oasis , for which she also provided the soundtrack . After a year, El Oasis was discontinued. Shakira later turned down all further offers as an actress, as she wanted to concentrate on her music career.

Shakira returned to the music business in autumn 1995 with the album Pies descalzos (Barefoot) . It established its commercial success with over five million copies sold. The single Estoy aquí (I am here) reached number one in the Colombian charts and also attracted international attention. The album The Remixes contained mixes of tracks that were on Pies descalzos . Since Shakira speaks Portuguese , some titles have also been recorded in Portuguese.

Shakira released her next album ¿Dónde están los ladrones? (Where Are The Thieves?) (1998) produce by Emilio Estefan, Jr. Large-scale production cost over $ 3 million. The album received critical acclaim and was also commercially successful with seven million copies sold. It contained among other things the hit single Ojos así (eyes like this) , which was also successful worldwide. The album's success was followed by an MTV Unplugged concert, which was released on CD and DVD.

2001–2004: Global breakthrough

In 2001 Shakira began work on an English language album, collaborating with Gloria Estefan . Gloria Estefan translated the song Ojos así from Shakira's album ¿Dónde están los ladrones? into English and Shakira wrote new songs for her album Laundry Service, which was released in autumn 2001 . It was Shakira's first bilingual album and was marketed in Hispano America under the name Servicio de lavandería .

The English lyrics brought her additional listeners to the international market and contributed to the album selling 13 million copies worldwide. With the singles like Whenever, Wherever and Underneath Your Clothes , which were also very successful, this meant the breakthrough for Shakira to become an international superstar.

A limited edition of the album called Washed and Dried contains three bonus tracks and a bonus DVD with the music video for Objection (Tango) , a live performance on MTV and the Making of of Objection (Tango) .

In 2003 Shakira went on a world tour, which also took her to Germany to perform. The live album for this tour, Live and off the Record , released in spring 2004 , contains a CD with live songs and a DVD which, in addition to the 90-minute live concert, also offers detailed documentation about the tour and interviews.

Since 2013: Shakira and The Voice

From March 2013 Shakira was a juror for the fourth season of the US casting show The Voice . The following season Christina Aguilera took her place, Shakira returned to the studio to record her eighth album. On October 9th, she gave a concert in New York's Bryant Park to mark her partnership with T-Mobile . In the future, T-Mobile will distribute its music in a “new and innovative way”, as Shakira said, and draw attention to its aid organization Fundación Pies Descalzos with advertising campaigns and other support . Her album, which was released later, was offered to 50,000 US T-Mobile users for free download and an app was published.

On January 13, 2014, a duet with Rihanna , Can't Remember to Forget You , was released, the first single from her upcoming English-language album. The Spanish version of the song without Rihanna, Nunca me acuerdo de olvidarte , wasn't released until January 21st. The next day she explained that the album, because it was neither conceptual nor thematic and she had experienced a kind of self-discovery when the album was created, would be called Shakira . An exclusive version marketed in cooperation with the US discount retailer Target Corporation was available for pre-order from January 26th. The album was released in Germany on March 21, 2014.

She also contributed to the Disney animated film Zoomania (original title: Zootopia ) the theme song Try Everything . The song was released for the first time as a single on January 22, 2016, the film opened on March 3, 2016 in German cinemas and one day later in US cinemas.

Her name appeared in 2017 in connection with the so-called Paradise Papers , which exposed tax avoidance tactics by the super-rich.

In May 2017 Shakira released the album El Dorado . In the summer of 2016, the first single from the album, "La bicicleta", was released, which was created in collaboration with Carlos Vives. The second single on the album, "Chantaje", was created together with the singer Maluma, who is also from Colombia. The song received numerous awards and sold over two million times in a short time. The third single was "Me enamoré", another Spanish-language song. The music video for the song is about Shakira, her partner Gerard Piqué and their love affair. The album also stayed in the charts for a few weeks. The start of the tour for the album was planned for autumn 2017, but had to be postponed to June 2018. The reason for this was Shakira's vocal cord bleeding. In spring 2018 she and Maluma recorded their third single together after “Chantaje” and “Trap” with “Clandestino”. The Spanish-language single was released on June 8, 2018. The third single was the song "Me enamoré", which received several awards.

social commitment

Shakira in 2011 in a kindergarten

In 1997 Shakira founded the Fundación Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation) to help children in Colombia. With the help of the Ministry of Education and the Colombian Institute for Family Aid, the foundation runs a program of educational measures and food aid for homeless and needy children. In six schools in Barranquilla, Bogotá and Quibdó , over 5,000 children are currently being looked after. The organization is also active in Haiti and South Africa . In 2003 Shakira was named ambassador for the United Nations Children's Fund , UNICEF . In April 2006 she was awarded a prize by the United Nations for establishing her foundation .

In her role as ambassador for UNICEF , which she has held since 2003, she travels to areas affected by climate disasters and campaigns for children.

In September 2007, Shakira donated $ 40 million through her ALAS foundation to accelerate the reconstruction of the natural disaster regions of Peru and Nicaragua . She also pledged five more million each for four South American countries to support educational projects. The money will be used for the reconstruction of sanitary facilities, the reconstruction of the education system and funds to improve the quality of life in the areas affected by the natural disasters. In December 2007 she received the "Charity Person of the Year" award for her commitment on the program Ein Herz für Kinder ( ZDF ).

In late December 2007 Shakira visited Bangladesh to support the victims of cyclone Sidr . On her 32nd birthday, Shakira opened a six million dollar school in her hometown of Barranquilla . It is the fifth school that Shakira and her foundation have founded.

She also won a US $ 40 million commitment from the Spanish government for the 2007 Clinton Global Initiative to help victims of natural disasters.

In 2010, Shakira was involved in the benefit single Ay Haiti alongside Alejandro Sanz , Miguel Bosé , Juanes and Enrique Iglesias , which was recorded for the benefit of the Haiti earthquake victims . In the same year, the US President Barack Obama invited them to the White House to discuss policies on children.

Music style and appearance

Shakira's mix of rock , pop and Latin rock made her famous throughout the Spanish-speaking world in the 1990s. But only with the change from Spanish to English did the breakthrough on the North American and European markets follow. In contrast to artists like Ricky Martin or Soraya , Shakira is not only a Latin star, but also moves in other musical genres. So on Laundry Service you found a mixture of rock and pop together with South American elements.

Her idol is the Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain . She also states that bands like The Beatles , The Cure , Led Zeppelin and The Police influence her music. The German band Scorpions also counts them among their favorites; In a Pepsi commercial and at concerts she wore a band's T-shirt, and in 2002 Rudolf Schenker from the Scorpions presented her with one of his guitars. In addition, due to the origin of her father, Arab influences also play a role in her music.

She is known for her sensual-erotic dance style, which is heavily influenced by belly dance , and contains a lot of hip swing. In live performances and in her music videos, she often appears in skimpy, provocative costumes and barefoot .

The Literature - Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez wrote about them: "Shakira's music has a personal touch that is second to none. Nobody can sing and dance like her, at any age, with such innocent sensuality that seems to be her own invention. "

Texts

Shakira wrote her own lyrics in her native Spanish as a child . Even today she still writes a large part of her songs herself, although she works with various other songwriters such as Luis Fernando Ochoa and Lester Mendez . Shakira could only write her first English texts with the help of a rhyming dictionary :

"Ordering a pizza in English or giving instructions to a lawyer is no problem, but writing a love song in a language you have learned is a difficult job."

- Shakira

In the meantime, however, her English has improved so much that she no longer has to resort to these aids that often. But an editor of the American trade journal Vibe said: “In Spanish, her music is pop with poetry. In English, their texts drown in clichés. "

Her lyrics are often about love. But there are also songs with political or socially critical statements. An example of this is the song Se quiere, se mata (you want it / love it, you kill it) , which is about a girl who loves a boy her parents don't like and who accidentally becomes pregnant . She dies as a result of the secret abortion . With the song Shakira criticizes the actions of many parents and this form of abortion. On the album ¿Dónde están los ladrones? Shakira criticizes the corruption of church representatives, teachers and politicians in the song Octavo día (The eighth day) .
