Barranquilla , officially Distrito Especial, Industrial y Portuario de Barranquilla (Spanish for special industrial and port district Barranquilla ), is the capital city and a municipality ( municipio ) of the departments of Atlántico in Colombia and fourth largest city in the country. Barranquilla is the center of the metropolitan area of Barranquilla .
Barranquilla is the seat of the Archdiocese of Barranquilla .
geography
The city is located at the mouth of the Río Magdalena in the Caribbean in the northwest of the country. The climate is Caribbean warm ( tropical ). Barranquilla borders in the east on Sitionuevo in the Departamento del Magdalena , in the north on Puerto Colombia and the Caribbean, in the west on Puerto Colombia, Galapa and Tubará and in the south on Soledad .
- Metropolitan area
With the formation of metropolitan regions, the Colombian government is trying to control the planning and agreements of cities that are close to one another. A core city and several neighboring cities that are dependent on this core city form a planning region. Barranquilla became a metropolitan area in 1981 with the municipalities of Soledad , Malambo , Galapa and Puerto Colombia .
population
The municipality of Barranquilla has 1,236,202 inhabitants, of which 1,231,939 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality. 2,123,081 people live in the metropolitan region (as of 2019).
history
The small port on the Río Magdalena was only used for inland navigation until the 19th century . After the river delta was made navigable, Barranquilla had access to the sea. This replaced the seaport of Puerto Colombia on the Caribbean Sea, about 20 km away .
carnival
Barranquilla is known as one of the world's largest carnival strongholds. The carnival is celebrated here on the four days before Ash Wednesday . In November 2003, Barranquillas Carnival was added to the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity . The Barranquilla Carnival is an oral World Heritage Site of the United Nations, the largest folk festival in Colombia and one of the five most important carnivals in the world. It has been celebrated for more than 100 years.
The carnival traditionally begins on January 20th with the “Lectura del Bando” by the carnival queen. From then until the actual carnival, there are evening events and parades in the individual districts. On the Friday before Carnival, the Carnival Queen is crowned (the Carnival Queen has been determined since November, but the coronation only takes place on the Friday before Carnival begins), who leads the Flower Battle (Batalla de Flores) the following day. Two other major events follow: the Gran Parada on Sunday and the Festival de Orquestas y Acordeones on Monday. Joselito Carnaval finally dies on Tuesday and is solemnly mourned and buried in the presence of the royal couple and their extras, all in black and with candles.
As in Germany, the carnival is over on Ash Wednesday.
Attractions
As a commercial and industrial city, Barranquilla itself does not have many attractions. Popular excursion destinations are the world cultural heritage Cartagena with its spectacular old town, Santa Marta and immediately behind it the Parque Tayrona , part of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta , where the highest peaks in Colombia, the Pico Simón Bolívar and the Pico Cristóbal Colón , both with over 5600 m height.
Economy and Infrastructure
economy
Barranquilla is the main port on the Colombian Caribbean coast. Chemical products, cement, textiles and packaging are manufactured in Barranquilla.
