The Departamento del Cauca is a province in southwest Colombia . Cauca, which borders the Pacific in the west, includes the islands of Gorgona (approx. 50 km west of the coast) and Malpelo (approx. 450 km west of the coast). The province shares its wider borders in the north with the Departamentos de Valle del Cauca and Tolima , in the east with Huila and Caquetá and in the south with Putumayo and Nariño .
The Cauca is one of the departments with the highest proportion of indigenous people. The peoples of the Paez (Nasa), Guambiano and Embera live here .
Cauca is one of the poorest provinces in Colombia. In agriculture , the cultivation of corn , sugar cane , wheat , bananas , coffee and potatoes dominate . Gold, oil shale and sulfur are the Caucasus mineral resources.
In Cauca there are extensive nature parks, including the island nature park Gorgona y Gorgonilla .
