The Departamento de Caldas is a department in central Colombia . It borders the Antioquia in the north, the Cundinamarca in the east , and the Departamentos de Tolima and Risaralda to the south , which also shares the border with Caldas in the west.
The coffee is the main product of agriculture . Sugar cane , yuca , bananas and corn are still grown. Cattle breeding is also widespread. In the industry, the production of ceramics and glass and the processing of leather and wood predominate.
The department was founded on April 11, 1905, before the area belonged to the Departamento de Antioquia. The name refers to the Colombian freedom fighter Francisco José de Caldas . In 1966 the two Departamentos de Quindío and Risaralda were separated from Caldas.
