The Departamento del Vichada is an administrative area in eastern Colombia . The then largely covered by tropical forest area was established in 1913 as a so-called "Commissariat" ( Comisaría ) and in 1991 elevated to the rank of department . It is bordered to the north and east by Venezuela , the south with the departments of Guainía and Guaviare , in the west of Meta and northwest are Casanare and Arauca .
Named after the then Colombian Prime Minister Pedro María Carreño, the main town founded in 1913 ( municipality ( municipality ) since 1954 , official capital since 1991) of Vichada, which essentially consists of an airfield with surrounding administrative buildings and settlements, bears the name Puerto Carreño.
Agriculture and cattle farming are the economic pillars of the region. There are corn , yuca , plantains and cocoa grown on acid soils inferior. Hunting , fishing and iron and uranium also play an important role in mining .
The majority of the population are indigenous people from various tribes. The Tuparro National Park is well worth a visit .
