Location of Putumayo in Colombia

The Departamento de Putumayo is a department on the southwestern edge of Colombia . It borders the states of Peru and Ecuador in the south and the four Colombian departments of Nariño in the west, Cauca (only ~ 50 km) and Caquetá in the north and the Amazon in the east on the other .

The soils of the department are predestined for agriculture . Mainly corn , bananas , rice , sugar cane and yams are grown. The region is also rich in mineral resources, oil is extracted and there are gold and silver mines .

The La Paya National Park is located in Putumayo . The Río Putumayo forms the border with Ecuador and Peru .

Administrative division

The Departamento de Putumayo consists of 13 Municipios . The population figures are based on the 2005 DANE census and extrapolated for 2018.
