Villagarzon is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Putumayo in southern Colombia on the border with Ecuador .
geography
Villagarzón is located in the sub-region Medio Putumayo in the Departamento de Putumayo at an altitude of 426 meters at the transition from the Andes to the Amazon basin and has an average annual temperature of 24 ° C. The municipality borders Santiago and Mocoa in the north, Mocoa in the west, Puerto Caicedo and Orito in the south and Orito in the west.

history
In the 1930s there was a settlement called Urcusique , a Corregimiento of Mocoa. In 1942 the settlers decided to move to the place where it is today. It was officially founded as Villa Amazónica in 1946 by Julio Garzón Moreno. Since 1977 the place has the status of a municipality. The current name refers to the founder, who was also the first mayor of the municipality.
