Orito is a municipality ( municipio ) in southwestern Colombia in Putumayo Department on the border with Ecuador .

geography

Orito is the second largest town in the department of Putumayo and is located at about 500 meters above sea level between the eastern slope of the Cordillera Real and the forest area on the Putumayo River . On the ridge above its source river Río Guamuez there are other settlements belonging to the municipality. West of Orito, the last foothills of the Andes reach about 1000-2000 meters in altitude. The main town of Orito is located on the Río Orito and has an average temperature of 27 ° C.

The capital Bogotá is 500 km as the crow flies, the city of Pasto in the neighboring coastal department of Nariño about 100 km. The road there leads via the neighboring community of Puerto Asís and via Mocoa , the capital of Putumayo.

The municipality borders in the north on Villagarzón , in the east on Puerto Caicedo and Puerto Asís, in the south on Valle del Guamuez and in the west on Pasto, Funes , Puerres , Córdoba and Ipiales in Nariño.

The municipality of Orito has 57,774 inhabitants, of which 26,893 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The area of ​​today's Orito municipality has been inhabited by the indigenous peoples of the Inga , Uitoto , Quillacinga and Kamsá since before the arrival of the Spaniards . Today's place was only created around 1963 around an oil production area . Orito received parish status in 1979.

economy

The main industries of Orito are agriculture , animal husbandry , oil production and timber industry . In particular, bananas , cassava , maize , potatoes and sugar cane are grown for Panela . The oil is transported via an oil pipeline to Tumaco , from where it is exported.
