Puerto Guzmán is a Colombian municipality ( municipio ) in Departamento de Putumayo .
geography
Puerto Guzmán is located in the north of Putumayo about 50 km from Mocoa on the Río Caquetá and has an average temperature of 26 to 28 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on Piamonte in the Departamento del Cauca , in the south on Puerto Leguízamo , in the east on Curillo , Solita and Solano in the Departamento del Caquetá and in the west on Mocoa, Puerto Caicedo and Puerto Asís .
population
According to a census by the Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística (DANE) in 2005, extrapolated for the year 2019, the municipality has 24,355 inhabitants, of which 5213 live in the urban part of the municipality (cabecera municipal) .
In Puerto Guzmán there are the four Indian reservations Descanso , Calenturas , Aguaditas and Villacatalina de Puerto Rosario . There are also Afro-Colombian settlements.
history
Puerto Guzmán was founded in 1975 and gained parish status in 1994.
On February 26, 2012, nine people were killed in fighting between the FARC and the armed forces of Colombia on one of the Indian reservations.
economy
The main legal industry of Puerto Guzmán is cattle breeding and husbandry . Subsistence farming also plays an important role . In addition, gold and oil are extracted from which the population benefits very little.
Infrastructure
Puerto Guzmán itself does not have an airport, but it is possible to reach the community via the airports of the neighboring communities of Puerto Asís and Villagarzón . Most of the roads in the community are in poor condition. Shipping over the Río Caquetá , which connects Puerto Guzmán with Cauca , Caquetá and Puerto Leguízamo , plays an important role .
