Ipiales is a municipality ( municipio ) in Nariño Department in the southwest of Colombia , just 5 km from the border with Ecuador removed.

Ipiales is also called the city of the three volcanoes ( la ciudad de los tres volcanes ), as one can see the three volcanoes Cumbal , Chiles and Azufral from Ipiales .

The largest attraction in the area of ​​Ipiales is the pilgrimage church of Las Lajas (full name: El Santuario de la Virgen del Rosario de Las Lajas en Ipiales ). The church is built outside the village on a bridge over a gorge, the altar is built directly into the rock.

Ipiales is located in southwest Colombia in the Obando province in the Departamento de Nariño at an altitude of 2900 m in the Altiplano de Túquerres e Ipiales plateau in the Nudo de los Pastos , about 80 km from Pasto . The municipality borders in the north on Pupiales , Gualmatán and Contadero , in the south on the provinces of Carchi and Sucumbíos in Ecuador , in the west on Aldana , Cuaspud and Carchi and Sucumbíos in Ecuador and in the east on Córdoba , Potosí and Orito and Valle del Guamuez in the Departamento de Putumayo .

The municipality of Ipiales has 151,533 inhabitants, of which 112,350 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019). Most of the residents are mestizo and indigenous .

history

It is unclear when exactly Ipiales was founded. One hypothesis is a natural evolution from an indigenous village to a Spanish settlement. Other hypotheses name Spanish foundations and relocations between 1585 and 1615. The entire colonial period was shaped by the implementation of the Spanish language, culture and production methods. After independence, the importance of Ipiales grew slowly. From 1881 there was a customs post at the border crossing at the Rumichacha Bridge, which made Ipiales the most important border crossing to Ecuador.

The proximity to the border gives the city its economic importance. In particular, there is retail . Many Ecuadorians make day trips to Ipiales to buy cheap clothes there in one of the many clothing stores. There are programs designed to promote industrial production for export. Rumichaca Bridge

Ipiales is located on the Panamericana , which connects Ipiales with the interior of Colombia and through the Rumichaca bridge over the Río Guáitara with Tulcán in the Carchi province in Ecuador. Ipiales has San Luis Airport , which is served from Bogotá , Cali and Puerto Asís . The airport is located on the territory of the neighboring municipality of Aldana .
