Samaniego is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Nariño in Colombia . In Samaniego there is a subsidiary of the Universidad de Nariño .

geography

Samaniego is located in the province of Túquerres in Nariño at an altitude of 1750  m above sea level. NN , 117 km from Pasto . Most of the municipality's area is mountainous, but it also includes some flatter sections. The municipality borders on La Llanada to the north, Santacruz and Providencia to the south, Linares and Ancuyá to the east and Barbacoas and Ricaurte to the west .

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous peoples of the Pastos , Sindaguas and Abades lived in the area of ​​today's Samaniego . The activities of the first Spaniards in the region were limited to warfare and then to exploiting the indigenous peoples with the encomienda system. Samaniego itself was only founded in 1837 and declared a municipality in 1848.
