Túquerres is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Nariño in Colombia . In Túquerres there is a subsidiary of the Universidad de Nariño .

Túquerres is located in the province of Túquerres in Nariño at an altitude of 3104  m above sea level. NN , 72 km from Pasto . In the area of ​​Túquerres is the Azufral volcano . The municipality borders on Providencia to the north, Sapuyes and Ospina to the south, Guaitarilla , Imués and Providencia to the east and Santacruz to the west .

history

There are different versions of the history of the founding of Túquerres. Either the place was founded in 1447 by the indigenous cacique Túquerres or in 1536 by clergymen who came to the region accompanied by Sebastián de Belalcázar or in 1541 by Miguel de Muñoz. Túquerres received the status of a Corregimientos in 1776 and that of a Cantón in 1793 . The province of Túquerres has existed since 1864. The place has been a municipality since 1933.

The main industries in Túquerres are cattle production and agriculture . Wheat and barley in particular are grown , but also potatoes . In addition to cattle production, there is milk production and pigs , guinea pigs and poultry are bred.
