The Departamento de Nariño is a Colombian department in the southwest of the country, on the border with Ecuador and on the shores of the Pacific Ocean . In the north the department borders on the Departamento del Cauca and in the east on the Departamento de Putumayo . The capital is San Juan de Pasto .
economy
There are around 600 industrial establishments, most of them small and medium-sized. Small industry is vital to the economy of the Departamento de Nariño as it contributes to employment and GDP.
The leather, wood and wool industries stand out. Commercial activities are important for the development of border trade with Ecuador and the port of Tumaco. Products such as hydrocarbons , Putumayo oil , palm oil and fishery products are mobilized through the Tumaco seaport.
The agriculture has with the cultures of wheat , forage crops, potatoes and fruit for the largest share of the total economy of the province. The industrial activity in Nariño is 95% based on the production of food and drink, handicrafts and the furniture industry. Nariño ranks first in Colombia with 47,309 tons of coconut production and 13,465 tons of wheat.
Its tourist activity has evolved over time and is becoming increasingly important. You should definitely try the cooked Hervido , a typical drink made from fruit juice with sugar cane liqueur.
The capital Pasto has a number of colonial buildings and Tumaco is a place with pre-Columbian culture.

The 64 municipios in the Departamento de Nariño are included in the list of Municipios in the Departamento de Nariño .
1979 earthquake
On December 12, 1979, the Departamento de Nariño was hit by the worst earthquake in Colombia to date in the 20th century. A subsequent tsunami destroyed thousands of houses made of wood. The earthquake took its place in history as the 1979 Tumaco earthquake .
