Location of Magdalena in Colombia

The Departamento del Magdalena is a province in northern Colombia . The Caribbean Sea limits it to the north. To the east lie the departments of La Guajira and Cesar and to the west the departments de Bolívar and Atlántico . The Magdalena department bears the name of the river Río Magdalena that crosses it and is named after Maria Magdalena .

The economy is based on agriculture , with the products bananas , coffee , rice , tobacco , yuca and cotton , extensive animal husbandry and fishing. Industry plays a subordinate role. However, the province of Santa Marta has an international port and extensive tourist centers on the coast with hotels and campsites. Magdalena also has oil deposits.
