Aracataca is a place in Colombia founded in 1885 , located in the Magdalena department on the Aracataca River of the same name and has had the status of a municipality ( municipio ) since 1912 .

Internationally he is best known for the fact that the Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez was born there and that his hometown probably served as a model for the place Macondo in the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude .

On June 25, 2006, a referendum was held in Aracataca on the question of whether the place should be renamed Aracataca-Macondo . However, the referendum failed due to a lack of voter turnout.

Aracataca is in the north of Magdalena 88 km away from Santa Marta . The city is close to the Caribbean coast . The eastern part of the municipality has a share of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta , the western part of the municipality, on the other hand, is flat and characterized by hot temperatures and the proximity to the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta . Aracataca has an average annual temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality borders in the north on Puebloviejo , Zona Bananera , Ciénaga and Santa Marta, in the east on Valledupar and Pueblo Bello in the Departamento del Cesar , in the south on Fundación and in the west on El Retén .

The main industry in Aracataca is agriculture . In particular, bananas , palm oil and rice are produced. There is also cattle production on a smaller scale .
