Santa Ana is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Magdalena in Colombia .

geography

Santa Ana is located in the south of Magdalena on the Brazo de Mompox arm of the Río Magdalena at an altitude of up to 120 meters. The community is characterized by many bodies of water and is sometimes flooded regularly. The municipality borders Santa Bárbara de Pinto , Plato , Nueva Granada and Ariguaní in the north, El Paso in the department del Cesar in the east, Pijiño del Carmen and San Zenón in the south and Talaiga Nuevo and Mompós in the department de Bolívar in the west .

The municipality of Santa Ana has 27,258 inhabitants, of which 13,448 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Santa Ana was officially founded in 1750 by José Fernando de Mier y Guerra under the name Santa Ana de Buenavista . The region was inhabited by the indigenous people of the Chimilas. Santa Ana received parish status in 1918.
