The Zona Bananera is created only in 1999 municipality ( municipio ) in Departamento del Magdalena in Colombia . The main town (cabecera municipal) of Zona Bananera is Prado Sevilla . However, the largest place in the municipality is Orihueca .

The Zona Bananera is located in the north of Magdalena near the Caribbean coast, 40 km from Santa Marta . The community is at an altitude of about 30 meters and has an average annual temperature of about 29 ° C. The municipality borders Ciénaga in the north and east , Aracataca in the south and Puebloviejo in the west . The Zona Bananera belongs to the unofficial but de facto existing metropolitan area of Santa Marta .

history

The Zona Bananera municipality was founded in 1999. Before the area belonged to Ciénaga. The first mayor elected in 2000 was Jesús Avendaño Miranda.

economy

The most important industry in the Zona Bananera is agriculture and especially the cultivation of bananas , after which the municipality is named. In addition, the cultivation of oil palms plays an important role. Important staple foods such as cassava , pumpkins , beans , corn and other vegetables are also grown. On a smaller scale there is also cattle production and trade .
